new wr450 question

i have a new 07 wr450 and was wondering if it being hard to shift from 1st to 2nd is normal when new. and its extremely hard to find neutral..i also have a 06 yz250f and never had this problem.

Its the nature of these bikes. I didn't really pay attention to the 1-2 shift or until I read about it in this forum. I will admit its requires more positive shifts than most bikes but since I click up hard anyways it wasn't a big deal. Neutral requires a fine touch. It used to take me a couple of tries each time I wanted neutral until I got it dialed in. Its all about getting used to it.

its not really a big deal i was just wondering if it was normal i dont really hit 1st anyway the 450 is suck a tractor you really dont have to hit first or i dont

I just purchased an '08 and it has the same issue. I'm glad I'm not the only one.... It is hard to find neutral but I think it is getting better the more I ride the bike. Thanks.

oh yeah mines not an 07 its 08.. and yeah its getting better but this bike im talking about has less than 10 hours on it so it really hasnt had the transmission broke in.

So far I haven't noticed anything, but I don't have but a few hours on my 08. I will have to pay attention to that.

My 07 WR450F is somewhat difficult to shift from 1 to 2 even sometimes sticking in neutral occasionally but I'm still getting used to it. Very rarely happens though. I also have difficulty finding neutral while rolling from time to time. Could be cause I'm a newbie! yuk yuk

Hey Guys,

my 08 WR450 shifts ok, but it was hard to find neutral when it was new... now it has 2000km's on it its easy to find neutral

Try adjusting your shifter, if you move it up a bit it seems like it requires less force to change gears. If its to low then sometimes you will have trouble shifting. That's what I did on my bike, and it improved a bit... but it is a 05.

A very experienced guy I ride with always shakes his head at others struggling to find neutral.

He surmises: if you're about to stop the bike then why not just switch it off and find neutral with the engine stopped?

It's dead easy every time then!

Sometimes the silliest sounding advice is the most sensible!

i do cut my bike off when i try to find neutral i think its just b/c its new though and the transmissions not broke in yet.

This is going to sound like I'm being a smart-arse here (I'm not by the way, I'm being serious!) .........

You do rock the bike backwards and forwards a little while trying don't you?

It just sounds strange that any bike would be hard to find neutral on with the motor switched off.

I've owned about 50 motorcycles in my time and none have ever been hard to find neutral on.

I wonder if there's something faulty or shimmed incorrectly (at the factory) inside the gearbox or something?

It's weird that one.

My '08 has been easy since the very first time I tried to find neutral. Never heard of that problem before.

I can never seem to find neutral unless I'm in the middle of climbing some steep, gnarly, rocky hill and I'm trying to shift down or up between 1st and 2nd. Then, varoooom - there it is!

I had to laugh, I read this thread before I picked up my new bike. I sorta shrugged it off... until my very first shift from 1st to 2nd yeilded me a nuetrel.

I'm like... damn... at least they warned me.

To my credit the shifter is up high to accomodate a boot... and I was wearing tennis shoes. [riding around in my yard - added for the gear nazi's.]

In a way, watching someone trying to find neutral it kind'a like watching someone fall down the stairs...

funny as hell...until it's YOUR turn!

Just shut it off, then mess with it. Not anywhere near as funny for your buddies to watch, but it gets the job done.
