Just upgraded from 03 to 07 WR450

13 posts in this topic

I just picked up an 07 WR450 for $3900 :worthy: It's totally stock and like new. I've been reading and searching the archives. TT rocks

Anyway, here are my notes so far. Any comments or advice is appreciated.

1. Air filter cage hole - The hole is "fixed" but I'd rather have the new cage

Part # 5TJ-14458-00 Service bulletin # M07-001.

2. Free Mods - grey wire, snorkel, throttle stop, AIS, removal, pea shooter

- Which AIS? DIY , GYTR, TT

- GYTR AIS # -> GYT-5TJ93-69-01

- Maybe an aftermarket pipe. FMF Q4?

3. Carb - jet it for 8500 ft - creeping & WOT - Rocky Mtns yeah!

- jetting YZ needle or GYTR mystery needle or JD kit?

- Which YZ needles are people using? 2006 Standard Needle for 07?

- What's a NCVQ needle? What's an EMR needle?

- Which fuel screw. Old WR has Zip Ty but may not be best option.

- accelerator pump (AP) o-ring or wire tie mod

- AP screw 1/2 turn mod?

- what's ACV?

stock jetting is prob pretty good for 8500 ft:

future jetting tbd:

- TT pic

5. Unabiker Rad Guards FTW!

6. New tires

- front D756

- rear D756 or Maxxis IT?

7. New black wheels

- front rim is bent a tiny bit - straighten? doubtful.

- have silver rims annodized black or buy new? which rims? hubs?

8. TBD

- Hand guards

- TrailTech from 03 WR or new?

- +2 sprocket on rear?

- graphics

- maybe new gel seat or ?

- mount Scott's stab from 03 WR --> SUB mount? bar risers?

- AVS controls? or local guy's replicas? RMCP

- new tool kit - wrap style?

That's quite a list. It's a good thing you only paid $3900, because you can easily spend another $3900 in the after-market world...

Just finished my 2nd ride on my "new to me" 2007 wr450. I like it so far but I miss a few things about my 2003. Both bikes are uncorked and jetted. The 03 has an FMF Q-pipe and my 07 has a stock pipe.

1st off the stock 07 pipe sucks! On my 1st ride the low-end was horrible and the bike wouldn't rev high enough at WOT to even hit the rev limiter. I gutted both baffles and yanked the pea-shooter...wow what a difference but OMG it's loud! Sound tested at 106 dB @ 4500 rpms. Unacceptable  I'm picking up a like new Leo Vince X3 in 1 hour for $125 :excuseme: It has 94db, 98dB, & 102 dB inserts

Power delivery is smoother on the 07 but the low end doesn't hit as hard as my 03. I wonder if the Leo Vince X3 will fix that  My 03 is a wheelie machine and I miss that. I wonder if the lower CG of the 07 is holding the front down or if it's a low end power issue. Any thoughts?

Suspension... Both bikes are set-up stock. I def need to tune the suspension on the 07. It's harsh compared to my 03 and I just don't have the confidence in the whoops etc.... and that 07 seat just works my arse.

Handling... The 07 feels ~25 lbs lighter, waaay skinnier, and much more nimble. :excuseme: The front-end feels much "looser" and squirly than my 03 though. The arm-pump kills me. I have a Scott's stab on the bench that should fix that. I never really needed it on the 03. BTW, this comparison is based on the 03 WITHOUT the damper. The 07 will def be easier to ride once I dial in the susp and get my stab mounted.

Fuel consumption... TBD

Were you able to stuff that 54 rear sprocket in there with the stock chain? I know I can fit a 52 on mine but I don't think a 54 will make it with the stock chain and guide....

No. I should of mentioned that... :lame: I had to replace the chain. I bought +4 links from stock (120 vs 124 links?) and then cut it back 2 links.

Got it! I still have too much life in my chain to swap it out just yet, so I'll go with a 52 rear for now. Thank's!

Why wouldn't you just run 12/50 :lame:

Same final gear ratio as 13/54 :bonk:

I ran that for a season on my 07 but now run 13/52

Good point. I already had the 54 tooth and then installed it. I found out the chain wouldn't fit and bought a new chain in hast because I wanted to ride that day. In hindsight 50/12 would have been the way to go.

A 12 on the front is a pretty tight chain wrap, so I stayed with the 13. I also wanted to move the rear wheel as far forward as I could to help out in tight/quick turns.
