2007 YZ 450 can't find neutral when running

13 posts in this topic

I just bought a 2007 YZ450, after ditching my 426 and it is hard as hell to find neutral on this bike when it is running. Anyone else having the same problems or is it just me? I have not changed the oil yet, that is this weekend project. What is the best oil for the bike? I ran Yamalube in the 426 with no problems, that thing was like a tank. Thanks for any help....

Start with your clutch cable free play be sure it is about 3mm (the width of a nickel). If that's OK, your clutch may have a problem, such as warped plates, unevenly settled springs, or a badly notched basket.

I think it is somewhat inherent with this bike. I just bought an '07 as well, coming off an older WR400. I like you find neutral difficult to find, I find it easier to find coming down from second vs. up from first. I do have Rekluse on mine so that may be part of "my" problem.

I have 0 hours on mine so I would hope there is nothing wrong with the bike.

Thanks, I did adjust the clutch and that seemed to help a little but nothing like my 2001 426. I take a look inside....

My 08 with 2hours on it is hard to find neutral as well. Is you idle too high? I had mine to high and it was damn near impossible to click in. You might want to check that also.

i find the same on my 07.... but what i do is just blip the throttle, obviously with the clutch in from 1st tap it up into nuteral.

hey, it works for me.

FYI : cable play is fine, and my clutch is not warped nor is the basket notched.

some of my mates have the same on a 2005 yz450.

let me know if this works for anyone else.

Neutral hard to find? Sounds like a dream bike to me! That much more of a chance you won't hit it while riding on a track.

Your not the only one. I got a 06 YZ450F hard as hell to find Neutal as well, running or not. But for some reason when I dont want to find it, I always do. I think its just a notchy tranny. Been like that from day one, and its never changed.

Same with my '07, it has under 15 hours on it. It wants almost 0 free play. About like what grayracer said, then it works fine.

My WR450 07 is the same. I find it easy to go down from second into neutral.

Exactly, it's easier to tap it down. Like someone said though, it is almost a good thing. I hate to be riding along and accidentally put it in neutral.

Ditto - I always hit neutral in tight corners on the track on my Yz250, usually ends up in a wipeout. I wish it was harder to find while riding.
