Why did Yamaha fill my forks with thin chain lube?

I am currently draining the "fork oil" from my forks.

The oil from the factory can best be described as a thin chain lube, stringy and sticky, not like any fork oil I've ever seen, that's for sure.

Has anyone else found this?

That fork oil deteriorates pretty rapidly and if the amount of grease yamaha use in the steering stem is anything to go by, then you can be sure they'll be using the super cheap fork oil.

Dunno how many hours you have on your forks, but I changed mine after 1 year of use and it was horrible, sticky grey stuff.

Since then I've been educated by Pro-Action who told me to change the fork oil every 25 hours.........

your oil is way over due for a change. The oil eventually looks like someone poured syripe into your forks. Get the forks stripped down an serviced as all the valving shall be clogged up.

One would normally assume that, but the bike has just 800km on it from new and the oil is still clear, not grey like old oil normally looks.

....... and yes, I have the forks completely apart to make sure there is no clogging of valves/shims or grey sludge left sitting anywhere ..... it's spotless everywhere!

The last time I rode the bike was 5 days ago...... (and that was fast around an MX track, clearing double-jumps, tabletops, whoops 2 at a time, etc. so rest assured my forks get a proper workout all the time. I have bottoming-out issues with it when just trail-riding) so it hasn't been sitting idle for any length of time either.

No, believe it or not this is brand new factory installed "fork oil" from Yamaha. This is the stuff they put in my bike a few months ago in Japan!

That is what the Kayaba suspension fluid looks like. It is, oddly, a very good suspension fluid when fresh, but has a fairly short service life, and is rather expensive. The weird, almost mucus-like characteristics are typical of it.

It can be replaced by any good fork oil. Amsoil Shock Therapy is excellent. Another good choice is Maxima 85/150 (5wt) Fork Oil.

have you tried that stuff?? VIBRATION CANCELLATION FLUID sounds kinda fishy to me.

The weird, almost mucus-like characteristics are typical of it.

I've never seen anything like it before!!

I ended up using Motul 5wt yesterday. Raised the level 10mm above stock level.

I can't report on performance yet, no rides scheduled at the moment.

But bouncing the front end up and down yesterday I can see that it is definately going to be far less inclined to bottom out now.

Is the fluid some what compressable? I really don' tknow how it could do anything unless it was.

I live near los gatos. I'll have to check it out. I like to suport the local folks.

No, it's not compressible. It's a non-Newtonian fluid. That's a kind of a complex technical concept. But it's interesting.

? darn it. knew better. yes non-newtonain fluid. if you use the corn starch example, it works backward of what you'd need to absorb high freqency. I'll shut my yap now.
