stalls in water crossing

I was doing a water crossing which was about 25-30 inches high and should have been easily handled by the wr. I had the engine rpms up and hit the stream with plenty of momentum, but the bike stalled unexpectedly. It wouldn't start backup until after I pushed it out of the water.

Is there a hose or something that I need to move or reroute so this isn't a problem.

Yeah, re-route two of the upper carb hoses (one from each side) to a point somewhere high on the bike, or do this: http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=623343&highlight=SXP

Yep - Trying to start it in the water is no good either unless you have re-routed your crank case ventilation into your air box. I think on the 05's they still hung down under the left side engine cover. While running that is pushing out positive pressure but it is my understanding that while trying to start if that hose is submerged, you will actually pull water into your cranck case... It happend to me on my 04', I know:prof:

Re-route your breather. I did on my 05 into the air box and don't get any oil or blow by. Exactly why I hate water. Damage potential is off the charts with just a little mistake or leak. Personally would rather try to climb up a cliff then cross water more then a foot deep.

This is exactly the advise I was looking for. I am going to take the top two hoses of the t's on the top of the carb and put them inside of my air box, which may or may not be waterproof!

but at least I wont' go dead in the water (literally) anymore.

If you loosen the clamp on the breather hose it will turn and run along the frame right back under the seat quite nicely. I've had mine like that for ages now and the peace of mind from knowing that you aren't gonna gulp water if you stall is terrific.:cry:

As for the original problem you mentioned of the stalling , I had that happen a couple of times too. The first answer posted is spot on. I ran the top ventilation hose from each side of the carb up to just behind the steering head and never had it die in a water crossing since.:p

You have to leave some of them down there but running a couple up high stops the vacuum created when they all go under water.

Simple things to fix. I can't understand why they build them that way.:thumbsup:

all these answers are great but i think you just shorted out your spark plug wire its surprizing how little water it takes to kill the spark ,in this condition my bike will always start right back ,the cure is to put grease on your plug wire .the water is causing the spark to ground out on the head just long enuff to kill the engine,

If the water comes up to the footpegs on a WR it will stall on the spot.

The sparkplug is a bit higher than that mate.:p

Mine hasn't died in a single crossing since doing the fix I mentioned and it used to stall in a big puddle.

Maybe it just needs new headlight fluid or seat grease or the tires could be on inside out. Better check the blinker oil at the same time.:cry:
