Best exhaust for wr426?

20 posts in this topic

Hey guys. Im looking at replacing the stock exhaust on my 426 and want to know a) the best exhaust to get and  (for any Aussies reading) where I could perhaps find one second hand to save money.

Most of the riding I do is fairly high speed stuff so I want something that will improve top end power but also improve response at lower rpm. Im not too worried about how loud the exhaust is, but I want something that gives a nice note.

Any input would be handy.

cheers

I used a Staintune slip-on for five years on my 426. Bit heavier than some, being stanless steel, but very rugged, good increase power. Best thing for me was you don't have to re-pack. They're one of the few that I'm aware of that give a big increase in power but are mechanically baffled.

how loud is the staintune? Im not too worried about how loud it is I just want it to sound nice and give a descent power increase. Ive also heard that the yz exhaust is much better than the wr one? maybe that would be a good cheap alternative...

I had a yz exhaust on my wr426 when I had it, HUGE difference, but way louder. Felt like more power everywhere. I would put one on my wr450 but Im trying to be a little more stealth, but if that is not an issue for you the yz can is great!!!

Sounds good thanks mate. One final thing, does the yz exhaust have a nice note or is it just loud? I still want the bike to sound ok without just being loud.

Ive also heard different opinions on what will and won't fit on a 426 regarding the 450 exhaust... Does anyone know from experience whether the 450 pipe will fit or not? The main issue with the stock 426 pipe ais that you can't take the end cap off the remove the baffles...

03 to 06 should fit OK. I tried a DMC slip on from my friends bro's 06 450 and it went right on. The only thing was that the mid pipe was close to the bladder cap on the shock. My friend said it was like that on his brothers bike as well. 07 and newer will bolt on but, not correctly. See if you can get you hands on a cheap stocker to try for reference before spending a lot for a new one.

Re the White Brothers , are they still available? I Googled White Brothers and it looks like they've been taken over by some other company which seems to be specialising in road bike pipes.

I had a stock yz slip on for years and it is way lighter than stock although I didn't see much power difference over an uncorked wr pipe. Noise is about the same. I recently came up on a great deal on Craigslist. I bought a barely used (3 rides) FMF titanium 4 with a titanium powerbomb header for $150. Super deal since the pipe combo retails for over $600 and it was in new condition! I've ridden once since I got it in some single track, I put in the quiet core and it still is kinda loud. The exhaust not/ tone sounds way better though. It seems to smooth out the power some but it still has a hit to it. I can't complain. I can't wait to test it in some more open space!

Yeah I always got the impression that an aftermarket pipe would have a nicer tone than the stock yz exhaust , and possibly a slight power advantage. Just need to hang out until one comes up at the right price I guess. Cheers

was that off a 01/02 wr or was it from something newer? How does it fit?

It was from an 02 yz426. It fits my 02 wr426 perfect! I'm not sure if they are available anymore new, they may have changed the name to "factory 4" I've seen those listed in catalogs and they look the same as mine

hey 02WR426Cali

have you ridden anymore with the FMF setup and do you think the powerbomb header helped out down low? sounds like a good system to me if it smoothes the power more especially from down low

That's what the quiet core is for! works well on mine, it's not any louder than a stock yz but sounds better

I just rode it again yesterday. With the quiet core in it's only loud when you get in the upper rpms but still quiet. I tried it without the quiet core yesterday and the power was much better especially up top, but it of course was loud. Power is a little smoother overall with less hit in the midrange. With the quiet core in I can't lug it as easliy as when I had my stock yz muffler on, I havent messed with the jetting with this pipe so it might be fixable. It just seems like there is a little less response down low when cruising a gear high at low rpm. Downshift and it responds great, but then it was reving too high for cruising. If you're in the right gear for every situation then it works great.

The stock yz has a little more bottom when lugging and a bigger mid range hit, but the fmf has more on top and pulls longer. The bottom is not that much different if in the right gear with the fmf/ quiet core. Without the quiet core the fmf pulls harder from bottom to top, but it's just too loud. I might run it uncorked out in the dunes, but everywhere else I will run the quiet core.
