Triple Clamps decision

After reading all of these archived messages on the WR, I now know that my trusty 98 WR is afflicted with poor top triple clamps. I currently use Pro taper bars and I know some of you have mentioned after market clamps.

Would like to get your recommendations on these, I'm 5'11" 190 lbs and currently use the bike for enduros, some hare scrambles and an occasional moto. Looking for better ergos while standing, not to mention better turning capabilities..

Thanks for your help, and Im so glad I found this web page, it really does help in making decisions when others have tried or experienced a problem and have worked or dialed it in better.

Scotts triple clamp setup. I treated myself this summer to their steering dampner and while on the phone ordering the thing, something just snapped inside me. I freaked out and ordered the entire dampner, clamp (top and bottom) and Pro Taper setup.

If I had it all over to do again, that would have been the only thing I would have done to the bike period. I really like this set up. Using their triple clamps brings the front end in by 5mm. Plus they are nicely machined and seem stronger. I believe there is a link to their site in the links section of this forum. But I bet you couldn't go wrong with any aftermarket brand.

Dougie, '99 WR400 with a lot of dumb, stupid, here take my money, I have to have them but they don't make me a better rider extra mods.

I'v been using the complete Scotts tripple (top and bottom) clamp, stabilizer, Pro taper bar etc. GET the Scotts tripple clamps that are the complete deal top and bottom and for the 98 & 99 bikes the top and bottom clams offset the forks toward the rear by 5mm. This shortens the wheel base and slighly focuse more weight forward.

The Complete Scotts setup is a oustanding piece of equipment and improves the hadling on the 98 and 99 WRs. I cannont recommend it more. If you get the complete set up with the stabilizer it will be one of the best imvestments in improving the bike that can be made--I'm done evey mod possible short of a BBR frame-- and this set up along with a Clarke, Ims , Ty Davis or YZ gas tank to allow you to get forward on the bike is probably the best thing for a 98 or 99 WR.

What I want is a KTM 520 streeted or a 01 WR 426 streeted in California.

But Since I live in Calif its to up in the air as to if I could get a plate. So I may have to buy a 01 WR 426 and put the engine in my current chassis (what a waste), or transfer all my street stuff to it including the plate and pray I never get pulled over and have some officer compare the paper work to the numbers stamped on the frame. However, a BBR frame for what I use these things for is not a good investment.

I really want a 500 minimum as the 400's just don't have the guts for agressive hill climbing period. I'v been spoiled by Husaberg 500's, 600's and built ATK Rotax engines and miss the torque and extra power--I do not miss the weight of the ATK's. But I need a plate and will never own a bike again without one. I basically ride every weekend and when not out camping its out of my garage which is in the middle of a city in Valencia Ca.

Maybe I should just retire and move to AZ, UT or NV. Then I can plate almost anything.

Clark I know a couple of people that have registered their bikes in Arizona or Nevada in order to obtain a green sticker and keep the fees down. I also rode with an acquaintance who had purchased a bike in Texas, registered it there. He said that when he registers it in Calif. after a year his fees will be the same as Texas. Just some FYI, that are loop holes.

By the way, how has Hungry Valley been lately?

Clark, I agree with you on the plate issue. Having a license plate on my 99 has opened up so much more riding for me. Any dirt bike I have from now on has to be able to be licensed. That's one real nice feature of the 520 E/XC--that the title doesn't exclude it from being tagged.

Thanks everyone, the Scotts system seems the way to go, however, my cash flow will be on the slow side, with christmas coming up and Santa (wife), will probably let me only get by with the ICO computer I want and a top triple clap, I already have the Pro tapers.

I was browsing a White brothers catalog today at my local shop, man, the CNC billet is flowing out of that catalog, they offered EMIG, and I think TAG stuff for the triple clamps, I will continue my research on this. Leaning towards an EMIG top with 10mm additional rise for protapers, but will look at others before I leap...

Yeah, I drooled over the Tags as well, they are VERY reasonably priced, are adjustable and have side facing top-clamp bolts for my Cycra triple-clamp handguard mounts…

…but I’m too boring for that and bought a Scott’s instead. Bar mounts are forward of stock ’00 (by an additional 5mm I think) and aren’t adjustable but this way I won’t be tempted to move my bars and have to buy another damper mount, plus the Scott’s clamp was very reasonably priced, I know it will clear the damper mount, has side facing pinch bolts too and it looks great.

But you gotta wonder why the Tags are so much cheaper, they even come with a billet stem already attached (no pressing and reusing stock steel stem) if you buy the lower clamp.

I don’t see any real benefits to aftermarket bottom clamps but if I did it over again I might end up with a complete Tag set.

How difficult is to install the Scotts W/ triple clamps, do you need special tools?.

How much would it cost if done at a bike shop?.

If installing the top clamp only you just need a socket big enough for the stem nut (can’t remember what size) and a torque wrench to retighten (something like 100 lb.s). Plus of course the assorted tools to R&R the handlebars and loosen the pinch bolts.

I have no idea how much a shop would charge but I’m sure that in my opinion it would be too much.
