2001 YZ426 gearing down

I have an 01 426 with the stock 14/49 gearing and its a tad too fast for some of the tighter spots I get into so I want to gear it down

should I go with a 13 front or a 52 rear? any suggestions I ride mostly woods but hit the track a few times to, any suggestions?

that would be a huge jump by going up three in the back and down 1 in the front, just go to the 52 in the rear that should give you plenty of change i went to a 51 and was happy with it.

sorry just saw that you said or 52 rear, just change the rear to a 51 or 52, a 13 front would be like running a 53 tooth rear to much bottom end

I have 13/53 on my 01 and want to go back to a stock counter sprocket. It is reduculously torquey and pulls wheelies just by rollin the throttle, but in tight stuff it is way jumpy and can get real scary because of the torque. if I were you , I would just go 13 on the front and leave the back stock because counter sprockets are much cheaper than rear sprokets.

I run a 13 on the front and a 51 in the rear with a 12oz fly wheel weight on my 2000 and it does greatl in tight trails. I would agree that it has more torqe then what is needed and the front end can be a little light sometimes.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to gearing. But there are some set-ups that you need to stay away from..... like anything larger than a 51 on the rear, if you go larger than a 51, your chain will eat up the rear chain guide at a quicker rate. And stay away from a 12 front. The 12 is a little tight for the chain to wrap around and I found that my chain started squeaking and seemed to wear faster with the 12.

I use a 14/51 for most riding. I do have a 13 that I use sometimes, it just depends on what I'm doing and where I'm going riding at. I do a lot of woods riding and some MX.

front sprockets are cheaper - I dropped to a 13 up front, about the same as going up 3 in the rear.

well I am at the point of needing a new chain and the front sprocket's teeth are starting to lay over the rear looks new still hmm but I figure I'll just order a 13 and 14 tooth front and a 51 rear keep the stock rear then I got some range to play with

god knows the front end comes up easy enough as it is now lol

gone1445 I'm pretty sure that stock on a 01 426 is 14 and 50. I'll be interested in how your gearing works for you and I just ordered a 13F 51R and new chain too. I plan on putting the 13 front on and if that doesn;t get me low enough I'll put on the 51 rear. I ordered a 116 link chain, but I'll probably need to take a link or two out if I don;t need the 51 rear sprocket.

Anyway I'd like to hear how your set up works for you.

... I'm pretty sure that stock on a 01 426 is 14 and 50.
Stock gearing for the YZ426 was 14/49.
Stock gearing for the YZ426 was 14/49.

According to the service data sheets i got from My Yamaha dealer/mechanic it is a 14/50 and that was what was on my bike.

The info I gave was quoted from the manual.

I have 15/50 on my 426 and it works awesome in the woods in the Oregon coast.

14/49 is the stock gearing

13/49 works really well for tight single track here in ohio
