Steering head bearings

3 posts in this topic

I know that bearings and races are normally a matched set, but is it as important for steering head bearings to be a matched set? I am changing the triple clamps on my bike and I have new stock bearings with the new clamps. I was wondering if I need to change the races to make the swap or if I could just leave the races and swap the clamps.

As long as your races look good, then just swap the clamps and be done with it. If they look pitted or rusty, then change them out.

You can choose not to replace the races but, they are so easy to install why wouldn't you. I am anal and have to use new stuff with new stuff.....Remember any wear on the existing races will cause the new bearing to wear faster. I suggest replacing them as a matched set. The hard part is getting the bearing installed on the steering stem. Do you need help removing/installing the races? http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=531298
