Piston Life wr450

Hi

I've had my new/old stock 06 wr450 for about 7 months and done about 100 hours. The dealer told me yamaha suggest piston replacement at 60 hours but that you can go quite a bit more than that.

I was hoping to go to 200hrs before replacing the piston as I just use it for trail riding. I do regular (every 8-10 hours) oil, oil filter , air filter changes.

What are your experiences with piston life?

The piston will last for years and years and years.

I must have somewhere near that number of hours on my wr450. I trail ride and race. I've still got tons of power.

Keep doing what you are doing with the maintenance and you will be fine for a while.

I dunno about hours but I've put almost 8,000km on the current piston/rings.

Thats about 1.5 years of riding with no drama.

I'm gonna look at changing it around the 10,000km mark.

Im purely guessing, but 60 hours sounds like an uber piss take. If you think about it, some riders here would need to replace there pistons every month. People would not buy WR's if the piston needed replaced every 60 hours!

The book says new ring every 600 miles. Anyone do that?

Well I just started having some issues on my 05. I estimated that I have less than 400 hours on her and I ride pretty conservativly. No hard revs, no top speed runs. Just good clean trail ridin. Well, now she's smokin pretty bad and iddles pretty rough. I was told that I need rings?:thumbsup: Clean airfilter after every ride day ride, and oil change after every three rides. My buddy has 2year old 06 and hasn't changed the oil yet:naughty: and his runs just fine.....Go Figure.

The way I ride I didn't think I was going do a top end ever.

Why would I take the engine apart if its still gettin broken in? Have you ever tryed to start yours by hand?. Well I tried to start mine and although it did light I almost broke my hand trying to get it past TDC

Be grateful that rings is all it needs at 400 hours. I'm sure you've read the horror stories on the other forums.

What is your ave speed in the dez...if you could approximate that?

8500 miles at 10 ave mph is 850 hours

8500 miles at 40 ave mph is 212.5 hours.

Mileage wise, 5000 miles in the woods is generally more hours on the engine than 5000 miles in the desert.

You mean the piston actually wears out? Dam! I'm bummed! I thought these things lasted for ever........

Oh Well, 8000 hours isn't too bad!

The same way. My riding style never changes. My hours must be off, either way three years on a WR. It just doesn't seem right. These engines are so bullet proof. I'm assuming the worst, hadn't had a mechanic look at it yet. Just my own opinion. :ride:
