Sleeving the bearing ID in order to fit the late wheels on the early axles creates a sleeve only 1.5 mm thick (.059").  Strikes me that the way to approach the problem is to press steel sleeves into the bearing pockets and bore them to fit the 22 mm bearings.  Anyone look at that yet?

Downside being it wouldn't be easy to go back to the 25mm bearing without some work. The sleeves work quite well and are quickly reversible..

The inserts could be made to fit the hubs any way one might want, and there's no reason they couldn't be removed.  Depending on how exactly the late model wheel was to be used, it could be a lot cleaner conversion, and less subject to damage in service.

Greyracer because you are a walking encyclopaedia with wheels I'm looking at 2013 Wr450 to fit an 2002 yz250 From what I understand it won't fit without mods but how hard are the mods? Fitter by trade so can machine up stuff just want it to be reliable cheers

The rear hub and bearings are the same one on both bikes, so it should be just a matter of using the spacers that came with the bike the wheel goes onto. 

 

On the front, the first thing you'll need to check is the axle diameter.  The hub is the same going back to earlier WR's, which had the same axle size as the older YZ, but the '13 lists different bearings, and I haven't paid enough attention to the WR to know if the axle size changed.  If it did, just use bearings for the '02.   But the problem that needs modification is that the WR hub is cut out for a speedo drive that becomes the right side wheel spacer and dust shield.  A custom spacer has to be turned out on a lathe that serves those two purposes.

Sweet thanks, it's actually a yz250wr that I want to motard so I'll need the speedo prongs off the wr hub, thanks for your help appreciate it

Yes i figured that was the answer but wanted to double check. Found a killer deal on a kite/dirt start wheel i wanted but it wont fit...... oh well. 

Will any of the newer WR250/WR450 REAR wheels fit up with a 2014+ YZ450F (or '09+ YZ450F I should say, they got the larger axle at that point from what I'm reading).  Looking for an 18" rear at some point.

No.  The WR still uses the old 5ET...00 hub, same as the '08 and earlier YZ.  The old/new YZ wheels use a different spoke set, as well, so the spoke flange diameters are probably different.

I have a 2005 WR450f I just recently acquired. It came with a  2nd set of rims that have street tires on them, and the hub on the street front rim does not work with my spacers. It appears to be the older 98-01 edition, with the four braces around it. After searching everywhere, going to every motorcycle shop in the Rochester area, it seems my best bet is to attach oil seals to each side of the bearing and fabricate outer spacers.

 

I'm assuming this because the speedo gear is just too small for this hub, there is extra space when the caliper and disc is attached, and I don't need it anyway I am using a trail tech....  I do have access to the machine shop.

 

The way I planned to go about this was attach the wheel to the caliper, then measure the distance across from hub to fork on both sides, and cut to size proper cylindrical spacers, saving the speedo gear and OEM dust cap spacer for the dirt wheels. Will this work properly? Would I get sudden locking of the brakes going highway speeds, because that is really not something that I want.... 

Hi Folks.  I have 2 sets of wheels for a 2010 YZ450f and am planning to buy a new 2014 or 2015 YZ250F.  Will the wheels fit and what do I need to do to make them fit.  I know the rear is 2.15 wide on the 450 and 1.85 wide on the 250F.

The rear with fit, the front will not. The front has a 20mm axel where as you will need a 22mm axles size. No bearings I have found have that different inner/outer bearing size to make work with those hubs...
