dry clutch

so i stripped out the clutch last night on the 08 yz450f, wheich slips when hot. and found it bone dry, it looks like its getting no oil whatsoever for cooling.

anyone seen this before?

Yeah, poor install from the factory. Soak your plates before you install them, and i lean my bike over in nuetral and fan the clutch a few times before I go out to get the plates nice and soaked. Common practice on dragbikes, which use clutches nearly every pass. Try it, I can go forever on a 450 clutch, then again Im not the rev limiter bangin tire spinnin clutch slammer that you often see at your local track

Using a plastic squeeze bottle or a syringe of some sort, you should be able to force oil into the passageway at 10:00 o'clock under the oil filter cover and have it eventually run out of the end of the main shaft.

thanks - i'll try that, someone said it may be the screen within the cases blocked, but you would have to strip the bottom end to check?? is this correct.

The only screen in the cases is the return oil screen. If that were blocked, the entire contents of the oil reservoir would empty into the engine and it would be swamped in oil.

i have noticed its a pig to get the right oil level, and to drain and refill, you have to drain it at both drain points.

when you fill it with oil you have to hold the kill button and kick it till you leg goes dead! then check it. im wondering whether this is because the oil sits in the different cavities.

how does the clutch get fed with oil?

drain both drains and put in new filter. Fill with 1200ml of oil, run for 30 secs. check level.

Well, no kidding? The manual spells that out quite clearly, and it's absolutely necessary. Always has been.

Do that, and you'll be overfilled. With a filter change, the late YZ450 takes 1 liter of oil (1.06 qt). 1.2L is the actual total oil in the system, as you would need to add after a rebuild. When working with US quart bottles, I dump one in, then add 60cc, and it always comes out right after running it up and checking.
