Anyone zip-ty modded an 08?

13 posts in this topic

I see lots of folks do it to their 06-07s, but I havent seen any 08s. I hear the ap linkage and stuff is much better on the 08, with a shorter pin on the accel pump diaphram and what not. Anyways, whos had their 08 carb done? My bike runs well right now, just debating whether to have it done or not.

The Zip-Ty mod is not just an AP mod. When it started out, they threw that in with the package, butg that was never what it was all about.

The modification alters the main air circuit to change the way fuel is atomized in the needle jet/emulsion tube, and this is the real core of where the improvement comes from.

You are correct, however, that the '08 carb is considerably improved over the earlier ones, and the alterations you mentioned to the AP system are, in fact, among those improvements. It's quite possible that the reason you haven't heard much about the '08's going in for the Zip-Ty mod is that they work well enough as is that they don't encourage people to change them that much.

I had the mod done. I timed the AP and used an O-ring around the linkage and didn't notice any improvement. After the Zip Ty mod I did notice an improvement. The response is a bit quicker and crisper. All in all I'd say it was worth $100, but don't expect a dramatic improvement.

Thats what I figured. I have a 50 leak for it too I havent even put in yet so I will prob wait on the zip ty mod and see if the leak jet improves the response as well.

Go with an R&D powerbowl and put in a 52 pilot jet. Mine rocks and I am at 5-700 ft elevation 100 octane or vp u4.2, 75 degrees and Dr. D pipe. Honestly it's like a modified motor.

The Power Bowl is a waste of money, IMO. The same results can be had without the adjustability feature of the leak jet. Once set, a leak jet rarely ever would need to be changed at all, anyway. The only true benefit to the bowl is that the check valves in the pump cavity/cover are improved over stock. Why in the world it should ever be necessary to use a pilot jet that large is frankly beyond me, unless there is something about the PB that restricts flow to the exterior face of the jet.

In all, it's my opinion that there generally is an unrealistic obsession these days with the accelerator pump and its presumed importance.

Maybe, maybe not. I messed with leak jet trying to jet my 07 450R. Granted I am a noob, probbaly not the best starting technique, but I have always suffered hard starts and restarts when hot after a stall. I put on the powerr bowl, adjusted nothing and it fires up 1-2 kicks no matter hot or cold. In my situation, it worked well out of the box.

Ive heard both ways. I put the 50 leak in the bike, and it seems to hiccup worse now when you whack the throttle open. Im considering doing the zip ty mod with the powerbowl as well. Adjustable leak jet couldnt hurt, esp since the 50 leak didnt seem to help things

If you went to a 170 from a 165 main, and the bike ran worse, would you then give up and order some expensive gadget, or would you try a 160 instead?

Then why, when you tried a 50 (I assume that was from a 55) and made it worse, would you not see what a 60 does? And check the pump timing.

I did the mod and feel that it helped. AnotherRedHead, you're welcome to do a back-to-back comparison using one of our '08 450's. We're out of Weatherford and ride all the NorTex tracks. Look for #792.
