WR450 trans swap to YZ450?

Just a curiosity question - I have an 03 YZ450F that I have put a lot of money into over the yrs personalizing it just for me. And now I am building it up to run the Baja 500 with so I am putting more money into it. I know the transmission on the WR450F is better suited to Baja so I was wondering if the trans from a 03, 04, 05 or 06 WR450F could be installed in my YZ450F?

It depends on what year your YZ450 is. You forgot to mention that.

Its an '03. He says so in the first sentance of the post.

What about putting WR426 gears in a YZ426? I recall reading something here on TT a long time ago, but I couldn't find anything searching.

A lower first gear and a taller fifth gear would be nice, but I got a great deal on my YZ (and I don't need a battery or lights).

My bad. Multi-tasking again.

In that case the link posted above covers it. The entire trans needs to be replaced to accomplish this, and you are correct as to the years that will fit.

In the 426, the gears can be somewhat freely interchanged, with the only caveat being that you have to be certain in placing a YZ gear next to a WR gear that you check the matchup of the locking lugs carefully.

Eric save your money for tequila and tacos. 15t front and 48 rear and you are good to go.

Gary,

That is the plan - hardly have enough to go now as it is. If though I like the Baja my thought is to keep using my 03 for Baja - have a lot invested in the old paint, buy a newer YZ for MX, So maybe later on consider a trans swap in the 03.

Thanks, Eric

Eric get that new yz now. Yamaha has some pretty attrractive finacing deals. Swap out your Baja goodies, 5 speed gear box, and now is probably a good time to sell your old bike. If you lock up your bottom end 300miles into the 500 I am going to refer you back to this post!
