Isnt there a bypass-check valve that operates to bypass the oil filter when the oil is cold and thick so that lubrication is faster at cold start up? My xr650l does it too.

This is normal. The oil pumps "buzz" a little when cold. Only lasts 30 - 60 seconds. Keep the RPM's up around 1500 to get the oil flowing well.
