Brake Fluid

How old is old? I know everyone says use fresh fluid, but if its been sitting in a sealed container in the garage what's the shelf life. Seems like a waste to buy a new container every time you bleed and then throw 3/4 of it away.

It depends more on the number of times it's been opened than on the age, and the more has been used out of the bottle, the more risk of contamination there is. The typical humidity in your area plays into it, too.

If it's half a bottle that was only opened once anywhere but the southeast, and it's two years old, it's probably OK. Then again, it doesn't cost much, either.

It wasn't really the $4, I just hate to waste all that brake fluid.

That's why I always buy the small bottles.
