Starting problem

Hi

I have a fully charged almost new battery on my WR 03 450, just bought.

All I get when trying to start is the ususal ticking, like when the battery is dead.

Any ideas? Battery reads just over 12 V.

Have you tried to kick start it.....??..........I know it sounds weird, but the other day I rode mine from the trailer to my garage, popped the clutch and the bike stopped.......parked it and washed it.......went to start it and it would "CLICK" only.......scared the living crap out of me....thought it was seized or something........then I kicked it over a couple of times and it started with the E button...........just a thought.....try kickin it a couple of times and make sure the compression is not maxed out..........good luck...

Same thing here..gave it a good washing and then just ticking. Could be a wet connector or ground?

Still having a problem. Can the starter be stuck or the relay on the selonoid?

Can you kick the motor over with the kick starter.......if it runs using the kick starter, then you know it is a starter problem........if not ???????:thumbsup:

Are you sure the battery is fully charged?

I know you said it's a new battery, in which case you should be getting more from it.

According to the manual charging is required when the open circuit voltage is less than 12.8 volts.

Checked mine a few days ago and was 13.1 volts. That battery is 2 years old.

I forgot to add in that last post that a charge off 12 volts equates only to a 20-30% battery charge when your read off the open circuit voltage vs charging condition.

I had the same prob whith my 03 .So i bought a trickle charger , left it on charge for 8 hrs ,even though the charger was telling me the battery was charged.That was 2 mths ago & have had no problem using the button. Also the manual states charge until volts reach 15.

These systems are designed for light weight. There isn't alot of reserve power like a car. The battery has just enough juice to start the bike in cold weather if fully charged. Starting is easier if the bike is jetted properly too. Many of us use a Battery Tender trickle charger to keep it topped off in the garage.

Put the bike in gear (5th), rock it back and forth with the power OFF. Then try.

could also be a faulty starter relay, using a volt meter will not give you an accurate condition of the battery, you need to put a load on the battery and then test it, you can buy battery testers but would be just as easy to take battery out and get it tested, most automotive supply stores will test them for free.

Charged the hell out of the battery. Still get the ticking.

Tried putting in gear and rocking the bike, still no luck

Now checking the motor......seems to be getting voltage.

Here is another possibility.

When I bought my 05 second hand the estart didnt work... just got the click sound.Kick start was fine. The bloke I got it from said he didnt use the estart and hadnt ridden the bike in over a year, so i figured the battery was stuffed. Bought new battery, still no start, charged it overnight, still just getting the click and no starter motor action at all. Bit the bullet and removed the starter, dissassembled it (be carefull to mark the front centre and back parts so you can put it back the same, as apparently if you get it wrong the starter will spin over backwards). I found the brushes were worn out and gummed up with grease (form previous owners overgreasing the back bearing ). After a clean up of the armature, housings and a new set of brushes it now works perfectly.

Just check if you are getting 12volts or more at the terminal on the starter motor before you remove it. If you get 12 v there when you try to start it then I bet you have the same problem I did. If you dont get 12 v there then the starter relay may be crook.

Great advice.

I did that, but mine was just plain burned out.

Cost me $250 to replace the starter motor..... :confused:

That sounds like a great suggestion.

I'll give it a try.

Put a larger battery on it the other day and it turned over very slowly and finally caught.

I think the motor may be gunged up.

Just make sure you mark the front/middle/back of the starter motor so you can put it back together the same way like moto_mike suggests!

A brush set costs stuff all and is easy to change.
