Rear tire

yes, but run it as far rear in the swingarm as your chain will allow, it will eat/rub on your mud flap thingy otherwise. Oh yea it was a beech to mount.

I really hated the way a 140/80 handled on the street. Turn in took a lot more effort. One thing to note on the bigger rear is the change in gearing, it will be similar to dropping 3 teeth on the rear sprocket.

Wow. I knew it would lower the final ratio a little over the 130/90... That much though?

With my current 15/48, I guess I wont need to get a new 14 CS sprocket.

I think I calculated it at 2. something. The 130/90 is taller than a 140/80, making it closer to 3 teeth. In other words, if you have a 130/90 and 15/48, you should be darn close to the stock ratio, (15/45 and 4.60/18).

I was just shocked that the 80 vs 90 would make that much difference.

So with 15/48, it'll feel like 14/48.

I don't think I'm explaining it well.

Stock = 15/45 and a 4.60/18 tire.

this would be very close to

15/48 with a 130/90 or 140/80 tire.

My figures were based on the stock tire height of 85% or 3.91"

a 130/90 is 5.12" wide x 4.61" tall.

a 140/80 is 5.51" wide x 4.41" tall.

The taller rear tire makes the sprocket appear smaller to the final ratio.

Yes, I understand a taller rear tire will make the final ratio taller.

I just wasnt sure how much difference there would be between the 130 and 140 only... Final ratio wise.

Before I begin, let me put on my asbestos shorts... OK now I'm ready

When trying to find that actual installed size the numbers on the tire don't always give you an exact size. The best thing is to use the mfgs data. Most list installed width and diameter. However, some like Michelin do not. It can vary a lot by manufacturer.

Most mfgs also list a rim size. My guess is that most would not recommend a 140 width on a 2.15 rim. Just because it looks cool doesn't mean it will work better. In deep sand or mud, yes the wider tire will generally help. On the pavement a wider tire may actually result in a smaller contact patch on the ground. An oversize tire will usually wear faster since only the very center of the tire ever contacts the ground.

Is the rear rim 2.15?

I realized that street use would kill it quicker than the 130 or 120, I just wanted to see how it compared to the 130. Which I loved.

And some manufacturers measure width at the sidewall, others at the knobs.

Thanks for all the info i have two wheels so one will be 120/100 and one 140/80 i found a problem my adjuster bolts are rusted into the swingarm and will not turn any ideas? sorry i dont know the proper name
