Just wait till you see me!lol:bonk:

15/48 here too. I usually switch to 13/48 for tight singletrack to try and stay out of first gear. I also like the way I can snap the front wheel off the ground in third.

I think the main cause of counter shaft wear is dirt or sand in there.

I was looking here for more info about different combos and 15/48 sounds like it would work well for commuting. When I get back to Arizona this summer it would not be hard to drop in a 14F for the desert. As far as the CS wear issue, has anyone looked into using liquid nitrogen to "temper" the CS?

Obviously it would have to be removed for the process. I saw a news story a while back about a guy that was doing this to the internals of various engines to eliminate wear and friction, a side effect was an increase in fuel economy, if I remember correctly. The CS would not change fuel consumption, but it could recitfy the shaft wear issue.

By hardening, I wonder if it would become brittle?

I run 15/49. It does require an extra link in the chain. Used to have 13/49, and I suppose that would be okay for tight trails, but it was awful on the road.

15/49 works great on my commute.

I just opted for the cheap route. 14/45. Numerically the same as 15/48 and cheaper. And no I haven't worn through my swingarm yet.

As I understand the process, it enhances the traditional temper of the part, but does not render it to be more brittle, if that is possible. The only thing I know about nitrogen tempering is what I saw in the article. It seemed to be an interesting process. I am curious to know more about it.

I just replaced a worn countershft on my 2000 650 l w/8k mi. When I bought the bike used I replaced the original 15/45 sprockets and chain, thats when I found the worn splines. So I wonder how much countershaft sprocket size and quality contributes to the problem.

What sprockets come stock on the L? I currently have the 14/48 combo on my 06.

15/45.

With your 14/48, how is it on the hiway? I'm running 15/48.

I haven't had it on the Highway yet, but assuming my speedo is accurate I have had it up to 85 with no problems at all and still had a little more throttle . It likes to wheelie in first and tries to in second, I can't wait to uncork this thing.
