XRR saga: a tale of not enough dirt.

Jim

Here is the scoop:

Bought a 2001 XR650R about 3 months ago.

It looked like this:

It was in overall good shape, with about 1000 off road miles. It still had the original front tire, chain, sprokets. Chain and sprockets are fine.

- motor (incl top end) had never been opened up, except for (1) valve adjustment

- rear shock was worn out

- FMF slip on

- tank was too big and geeky for me

- stock carb

- stock bars

- stock springs

- funky dual sport kit (but it worked)

- odo on speedo not working

- no mechanical issues, or abuse that I could find

So, I did this:

- upgraded to Edlebrock 'quicksilver' 41mm carb for better throttle response. Much better.

- upgraded the cockpit with top clamp, risers, bars, grips, relocation of speedo

- upgraded air filter, air inlet, side panel inlet

- went back to stock tank

- new rear tire, front tire

- full disassembly and re-grease

- new chain guide on swing arm

- new rear fender (nice and shiny)

- new replacement shock (which I haven't installed)

- brand new factory side panels (which I haven't installed)

- multiple rear springs- 10.0 10.5,11.0 kg

- all new dual sport kit from baja designs, except horn and kill button

- mini turn signals, mine rear light, better bar cluster, better harness

- mirror

- some other stuff I can't think of right now

Issues:

- rear shock needs to be installed, sag set, clickers adjusted

- fork oil needs to be changed

- Odometer still is broken

- no kill button

I don't know if you have ever ridden one of these BRP's (big red pig): they are all about finese and torque. Tons and tons of off-idle torque. Reving it does nothing. Short shifting it allows you to climb a vertical ice wall.

Tranny and clutch are a little stiff and very heavy duty. Not like a Maico or anything, but certainly not like an CRF.

Very, Very stable at high speed. You can ride all day at 60mph. It is currently geared for 75mph tops.

Extremely agile for being 277 lbs. I'm serious. It turns better (on smooth) than my X.

I have tried and tried to find a nice little place to make a small track near my house. You know, a small lot to do turns, and fart around on after work. I have had no luck in 3 months of seraching. There is just no available land close by, now that Rowher Flats and Drinkwater Flats are closed from the fire (for a year).

So, I'm thinking of selling it. All I'm using it for now is for errands!

Fun to wheelie..............

You should try an aftermarket header. It really wakes up the top end.

DONT SELL,jus run more errands. You KICK your self in a year if you do.

Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!:applause:

What purpose would selling it do?

keep it and get another dirt bike, like a pre 2002 two stroke. maybe a 300 exc. Then you have the king of the desert and the king of the trails. See sig.

I feel your pain...I had a 1985 XL350R when I was station at El Toro in the late '80s. There was no place available to ride without a long drive. I sold the bike and to this day I kick myself.

What was wrong with the shock for you to conclude that it was worn out? I'm curious how a shock could wear out before the stock chain and sprockets are worn out.

Um, it stopped working. As in no dampening. Boing, Boing.

The bladder is torn ? The oil is gone?. Don't know, but I got a near-new shock and spring for 48 bucks.

That'll usually do it.:applause:

Why not SM it? Would make one hell of a mean street bike, and with the right tires (distanzas) could hit some gravel/dirt roads if you ever find them near you.

by the way, did you sell the old tank already?

That sucks...

Blown seal and no oil most likely, glad you found a cheap replacement. Oh and don't sell it, just transfer to another location like I am trying to do :applause:

Krannie what are you doing with the 10 and 10.5 rear springs?
