Uni Filter for the R

I'm wanting to upgrade my stock air filter on the 650R. I was originally thinking K&N, but after reading some posts here I think I've decided to go the way of the Uni. I've read about guys using the Uni with the metal frame but can't seem to find them anywhere. I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but do they all come with a metal frame for the 650R? I've even looked on Uni's site and only see 1 listing for the 650R

Help please...

UNI come's with the frame.If your just street than the K&N would be OK,not my choice tho.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably be around 75/25 street/dirt, but who knows for sure. I'm just going to hang on and go where ever the pig takes me.:applause:

The Uni is a CHEAP replacement filter... don't do it!!! I recommend you stay with stock. Honda does an amazing job with filters and you really won't find anything better. Now... if your running only on the street then I can't help at all.

The uni filter I have is not cheap. It is made of three different kinds of foam, with a closed cell 'gasket' built in. I have seen the ones that are just open cell foam which do look cheap, but they do pass more air than the stocker, so you can get more jetting flexibility. Just have to maintain it more often.

A properly maintained UNI filter will do very well, filtering and flow wise. Better than a K&N filtering wise, better than OEM flow wise. WIN/WIN in my book.

If you plan on using the stock backfire screen, the metal frame won't fit. I'm a little gun shy about not running the back fire screen (even though lot of riders don't seem to mind), so the Uni metal frame is hanging on the garage wall.

In regards to Uni's reliability, with regular cleanings and a good greasing around the lip, my airbox is spotless, 3 years on this filter.

I bought a Uni and after one 150 mile ride in the California Desert when I went to clean the filter there was dirt behind the filter getting into the carb. I'm not a newbie and the filter was correctly oiled with Uni filter oil and installed correctly. I was shocked since I wasn't in the dust that much. The stocker never had this problem and I do use the stockers with the XR's only screen. For me the Uni would have been an expensive Lose/Lose.

Also, the same time I bought a Uni for the Pig I bought one for my CRF450R. I had the same problem on my 450.

I've never had that happen. Did you grease the sealing surface? Two stage UNI?

The PO had the UNI installed without the UNI frame and a XR's Only backfire screen. I got rid of the backfire screen and went back to UNI frame/filter only, but you must grease the edges well to create a tight seal. In doing so thus far, I have had no issues with anything beyond the filter. But, I have not tested the set up running thru silk yet... :applause:

Any filter, any bike: Grease the filter edge with filter grease.

If dirt is gettng through the filter, the filter oil you are using is no good.

I've used the UNI's with the uni metal frame and had zero problems for the past 7 years. i used BelRay blue filter oil. it's like molasses...

Uni's are great. Grease the gray lip so it seals against your airbox housing. The only problems I ever had was that after a number of washings, the red foam separates from the yellow foam and that when your bike backfires through the carb, you can singe (burn) the interior side of the filter if you are not running a backfire sceen in the airbox. I don't run one, obviously.
