Maico Help

Need some help from the maico guys. Just purchased an 83 spider and have no idea how much transmission oil to put in. I would drain and measure, but not sure if the current level is correct. I don't see an overflow screw so I assume you drain and fill with premeasured amount. Anyone know? Thanks

600 cc.

BTW the 490 Spyder is an awsome bike, even more motor than the 81!

Beg to differ, but no Maico motor is better than the 81 490. There's a reason these bikes sell for over $10K these days.

I've now been told 600, 700, and 800cc. Totally confused. I'm waiting on a manual so I guess I need to put off the maiden voyage till then. Thanks for the link, maybe I can get some more input to my question. Also my 83 spider is a 250, not the 490. Would that make a difference? I would think the cases are the same and they change the top end. Thanks again!

I've got the manual at the office. Will send the specs later today.

Alright, here's the deal. Checked my 83 Maico manual, the official one that comes in both German and English.

In German, it lists 650cc of 20w/50

In English, right below, it lists 600cc of 20w/50

THEN in the glossy spec sheet that talks about all the new features, it lists 850cc of 20W/50.

What's right? I think the German version of 650cc. I believe the other numbers are typos, which are pretty common in Maico manuals. Typos in numbers are especially easy to have and hard to catch.

Call Vintage Iron, they should be able to answer your question. Another guy you could call is Chuck at Madera Honda in Madera, California. He used to roost me pretty hard with one of those things. (559) 674-0041 Chuck is in the service department.

Forget the manual. They take 800 cc's. If it's not pushing oil out the overflow hose it's not too full. Too many people under fill the tranny. 800 cc's.

yep ..... i used to run between 7-800 cc never any problems. if you are nervous go 750 cc and go and flog that beast ...

Thanks guys. Sounds like 800cc is the way to go. Can't wait till this weekend... Jawbone!!!

El marko my Maico brother, have you ever ridden the 83-84 490? As good as the 81 490 is, and I've owned a couple including a reed valve 81. The 83 490 engine is everything the 81 490 wanted to be when it grew up.

Well, I own both bikes..They are both awesome bikes. The 83 just has a harder Honda type hit. The 81 is so smooooth and easy to ride, and corners better in my opinion. The 83 has a more modern feel to it. It corners like the modern 450s Ive owned. Both bikes are faster than the 08 450s in my opinion. I guess it just depends on what you like. The 81s are so expensive more because of the "Legend" status it carries....All in all, their both Maicos, the finest motocrossers ever built......

Maico ????

Finest motocrossers ever built ?

Somebody MUST have fallen and hit their head REALLY HARD or you MUST be joking (and it is a BAD joke) !:D

Let's be REAL here.....they are just about as good as any Hodaka or Bultaco, which are about as reliable as a 1972 Ford Pinto with 300,000mi on the odometer.:ride:

 ...Sounds like someone has eaten some Maico roost in the past and holds a grudge...

Proof once again that there should be an IQ requirement to allow anyone to post on TT.
