2001 XR650R for sale...thoughts?

I'm looking to buy my first XR. From the ad: "Good Condition, Runs Exellent, extra plastic mouldings, street legal kit 8500 kms, havent rode in 2 years just collects dust".

Photo looks fine...

Asking $4,000.

Thoughts? I'm in northern Ontario.

that bikes like mint shap vary clean throuw sum new tires on it fix the blinker i think u will get $4000 for it

i'm looking to buy the bike, sorry if my post wasn't clear...so is it a good deal provided it's in good shape? Is 8,500km a lot?

Ya, the price is almost $1k too high for my area, WA state. I just got my '93 XR650L with 7500 miles for $1600. I would shop around more. Don't let the year fool you, my tweaked '93 will hang with any tweaked 2008.

In So Cal that bike would sell for about $3k.

Things I noticed:

- poor attention to cleaning the bike: header is rusting due to poor maintenence

- Chain is nearing the end of it's life (huge chunk taken out of the air box splash gard is a dead give away).

- Stock springs: couldn't have ridden it too fast without upgrades

I'd offer 2500.00

Bikes are more money in Canada. I think I paid $4000 for a used 650R a few years back. I'm also in Northern Ontario. You'll love that bike on the logging roads.

Could use the above as a good bargaining chip....but if he's any bike savvy he'll probably get annoyed with you about these things. Chances are, most of it's life has been on the street.....that's what the tires shout, anyway. I'd look closely at the wheel bearings, sprocket condition, chain (I think the mud guards are cut out on the chain side to keep from obstructing the chain....might be mistaken on that though), ask about oil changes, frequency/type, any mods done to it?? Has it been opened up at all? How are the valves? Ever been checked?

Better yet, what does everything else look like that he owns? This will be a big tell tale about how he takes care of things. If it hasn't been ridden much in 2 years, plan on a carb cleaning and some possible seals (forks, C/S, maybe others?).....

All in all, these are great bikes, and if you ask the right questions you'll find out what you need to know to determine the condition and history of this one!

At the current exhange rate of 1.0001 CAD to 1.0074 USD $4000 is too much. The bike has a lighting kit. You should ask if the stator is stock or aftermarket.

If this bike has been sitting for 2 years with gas then you will have trouble with gumming. The chain looks tight to me, could need new sprockets and chain.

This bike needs alot of general maintenance. $2300 -$2600 if it starts easily.

8,500 km is not high mileage BTW.

I've had mine since 1,500 km, it's now 7,000 km, still feel almost as tight as new.

The 'R' motor has a pretty long lifespan, given then usual oil changes and valve checks.

Personally I think that bike looks rough. I'd be a little skeptical of buying that bike due to its appearance and on top of that paying $4K. I bought my bike new for a little more than that. First thing I'd do is take off the side cover to look at the air filter. That would be a good indication of how this guy takes care of his bikes.

I just bought an '01 with a tank, pegs, bars, damper and springs for $2,900 US. The exchange rate may be the difference.

Bought a 00 w/ less than 1K miles on it for $3,200. Pro-taper bars, Scotts stabalizer and triple clamps, excel rim, and black coil for my weight, street legal w the BD kit on it in San Diego where street legals are typically very expensive.

A bit pricy if you ask me. I'd go for the mid 2,000 range.
