Xl600R/XR650L Hybrid

It is, a 1980 model.

My dad bought it new in '81 but sold it to a family friend around '83 or so. I have great memories surrounding this bike. My dad let me ride it to school a few times, totally putting his trust in a 16 year old kid. It was the first "big" bike I had ever ridden.

Sadly my dad passed away at age 57 in '91. I contacted the guy who owned the bike sometime later and told him if he ever decided to sell it to get a hold of me.

I ran into him in a supermarket a couple years ago and he told me he was ready to sell, so needless to say I jumped on it.

Every time I look at it, it reminds me of my dad and the good times I had in the early '80s.

I still miss my dad very much. He was a good man and a great father.

Anyway, good eye, jjast. :lol:

The front end is '93 CR500. The swingarm is '07 XR650L. And the shock is '88 XR600.

The shock has a remote reservoir I'm going to relocate to the left rear frame tube where the tool kit would normally be.

Any of you guys know if it matters which way its mounted?

For any of you who may be following this thread, I'm pretty much ending it here. I'm not sure how much XR650L will be left in it when I'm done.

I have started a new thread on Adventure Rider in the Thumpers forum titled "1984 XL600R Build" if you would like to keep track of this bike.

P.S. I'm not abandoning TT, it's just that there seems to be a lot of interest in the ol' XL600 over on ADVrider so that's where I decided to put the next chapter of this build.

whats the advantage of the xr500 head??

Smaller chamber with quench band to match a 92mm piston. About a quarter point higher CR thean an XL head. No comp height issues with any brand XR600 piston. Edited by valvesrule

A little update for those who haven't ventured to the other site.

Got the frame powdercoated and the '93 CR500 front end installed along with the airbox, '07 XR650L swingarm and '88 XR600 shock.

Built a simple mount for the external shock reservoir.

Hung the main wiring harness and installed the handlebars.

have looked at most of your posts re: electric start. I've just got an XL600LM bike whose engine I plan to put in an XR600R but I can't decide where to put the battery. It looks like it will have to be a skinnier width than stock mounted across the frame behind (hopefully standard) twin carb air filter - where did you end up mounting yours?

The XL600R sold here came with a battery.

Over a year since my last post--what a schmuck.

This project is for sale if anyone's interested. :( I just can't seem to get back on it and have pretty much lost interest,
