xr650r gearing change - 15t to a 14t

I'm running 15-47 right now. Will I see a big difference with a 14t? It's too fast in the trails. I'm assuming the chain will still work. Correct?

That's the same as going up 3 in the back (14/50). You'll definitely feel more low-end grunt, though only you will know if it's what you need. The chain won't ever notice...

After you've tried it, come back and let us know.

Just put the 14t sprocket on (down from 15). I only took it around the block but it definitely has more low end grunt. It wheelies in first with just a flick of the wrist. A trail ride will be the test to see if I need to go up in the back.

How did this affect your top end ? I have a 98 xr 600 r and i have 14/48 and i was thinking of 13/48 but i was worried about top end and having to short shift it ( it is street leagel )

I put a 14 on my 07. Stock was 15/45. I run 14/45. It's better on the trails and I can cruise at 65 to 70 and hit 85 if needed to pass a car.

I dont know much about the xr600's internal transmission ratios....but a guy over at advrider. com said that his xr600 with 15X45 tops out at 75mph with the engine screaming....is this right!?!?!? If so, do you really want to go to a 13X48?

My xr650r with 15X45 runs 100mph @ ~7500rpm... and has enough torque to flip you over in 2nd gear if you wack the throttle at ~30mph

As you know, stock is 14/48. I'm running the equivalent of 15/48 (I have 17" wheels) and it's WAY better for the street. Stock meant that the engine had to work harder than I liked to keep me at 70. Unlike the ADVrider guy, 70 to 75 now is right in the mid-range for me. If you go the other way, your engine will be screaming for mercy at 65.

My bike is dedicated to street, but I can easily replace the front sprocket and get into the dirt. If you ride one far more than the other, gear accordingly and keep the "spare" sprocket handy. If you're riding street to get to the dirt...well, you'll always have to compromise.

I don't really do any highway, and I've only had the "R" for a few weeks, so it is still plenty fast for me on the back roads with the 14/47.

I have a 96 600R, and I put the 13 on becasue I do all trails and the 14 was too tall for the tight stuff IMHO. It made a big difference with the slow technical stuff. Since I am in the dirt and rarely if ever see 5th gear WOT, I dont miss the top speed.

It also made wheelies easier, but not as easy as I would like. I need a 650R.

If you ride mostly trails, very little street, 13/48 or 14/50 will be the ticket to make you happy. Stock 14/48 is still a bit tall for mostly trail riding if it's slower going trails.

I run a 14\47 on the trail and it's about perfect. It will still do short blast at 92 on the pavement and 85 on the dirt road.( It was loose dirt)

If I need to slow it down a little more I'll go up in the back because from what I've read a 13 in the front is tough on the chain, plus I have a case saver for 14t or 15t installed (although the case saver probably won't care!:banghead: )
