Cost of Maintenence.

I wish I was more anal and kept a log of what has been replaced, but off the top of my head, not counting bent, broken or upgraded parts before their time...

The bike 2004 XR650L, 28,900 miles

-seventh or eight rear tire.

-fifth or sixth front.

-forth set of rear wheel bearings.

-third chain and sprocket set.

-soon to be forth set of front pads, third set of rears.

-soon to be new rotors front and back.

-second chain slider.

-second headlight lamp.

-third spark plug.

-15 oil filters.

-60 or so gallons of oil.

-air filter oil.

How's your list?

that loooks lke im right on track with you.

need my 4th rear and 3rd front.

2nd rear sprocket

2nd plug

6 gal. oil and 6 filters

4 valve adjustments

I guess that I'm harder on my bikes, but they are older.

I picked up my 93 XR600 in 2000 and have been putting a lot of really hard miles on it. I have not really kept a good count but...

Engine

2sd and 3rd gears

2 new valve seats and valves

Rings

Cam chain and tensioner

Rewound stator ignition winding

Tires

At least 25 if not 30 rears and 6 or so fronts. When I ran Dunlop 756 tires on the rear they sometimes only lasted a month. Now I run Maxxis Desert IT's and they last as long as 6 months

Three chains and sprocket sets

One Linkage bearing

Shock rebuild

Forks rebuilt

New steering stem bearings.

New wheel bearings

One rear suspension bearing, another real soon now.

2 sets of brake pads front and rear and one rear rotor. Front rotor real soon.

do you use the special tensioner tool listed in the manual?

No never had one. I bet it makes it a lot easier.

It is really easy to do if you take off the right side cover. While the tensioner is a pain, I tend to have the biggest problem with the chain staying on the crank sprocket. With the case cover off you can just hold the guide back with your fingers and the rest goes together easy. I check and clean the internal oil screen at this time. It needs to be checked and cleaned from time to time, and this would be a good time to do it.

The Clymer suggests a method of using a wire to hold the spring compressed. Install the tensioner and cam chain and when done cut the wire out. It works, but I don't like it.

i would have done the wire trick had i thought about it when i did my cam.

i left the right cover on and just used bailing wire to keep the tension on the chain so it couldnt slip off.

the tensioner i was able to push down with the spring (the part that is a hook that goes into the hole on top the tensioner) off and then used needle nose to put the hooked end into the tensioner. was a bit of a pain but got it.
