XR650R or a XR650L?

11 posts in this topic

My friend is interested in buying a 650L and is wondering what the main differences are between the street legal 650R versus the 650L. He wants a good dual sport bike and will use it to commute to work (10 miles) on occasion. The rest of the time will be on dirt.

What are the main differences between the street legal R and the L? Advantages/ disadvantages.

Thanks in advance,

Tell your friend to come here and do some reading on here and he will see everything he needs to know for sure. R is an racing offroad inspired bike and a L is a street legal inspired off road bike

you wont find a brand new r any more. the l is street legal and heavier, less power. but it does better on road.

the r has been legalized by a few, more for desert racing. quicker, and a little lighter.

I love my XR650R I have to say it is my favorate bike of all time and Ive had lots . I do most of my rideing on the street and dirt roads with it [there is no desert in Ontario] :D The bike is just a blast. tThe power is great with 15 45 gearing the thing can boogy on the the highway. I would get the 650R and convert it no contest. I have beat the shit out of mine for almost 7yrs now Iam talking long lots of hrs here and aside from a few mods[and tires of course] I have not put a penny into this bike. I am gonna do a top end jod this winter not because I need to.But to put the HRC piston and cam in [itried one with the kit and now I have to have it]

make sure you post up a full report on the HRC kit, i am definatly gona do one when i come up with some cash.

The 650R is crazy on the street, 15-45 gearing^, it cruises at 60 no problem, gets to 90 quick! and pulls 2nd gear wheelies with ease, and throwing it around offroad is a lot easier considering its 40-50 pounds under the L

My buddy has the HRC kit in his bike and no shit it is a Huge boost in power. You think the bike is a pig now you should see it with this kit in it! It is f..in $$ though at least here in Ont it is $1700 that is nuts for a piston and a cam but I'm doing it anyway. I see you have 17s on yours.I would put a 41 on the back if I were you because of the smaller rim.

40-50 pounds, considering the L is stock. i figure stock on the L is what 326 lbs.? i have a box of shaved pork that weighs 30 lbs. off of my L. the only weight i've added is a fork brace. so i figure i'm at 299-301 lbs. with my L. what is stock weight on an R? 280?

650L stock 326

650R stock 277

326-277 = 49 right?

Both those figures are light on but yes the BRP is a bit lighter than the L.

I have an R with 15/46 gearing and it sometimes torque wheelies 5th gear no clutch no problems, but stock it ain't.
