XL600R stator

I have heard that one of the weak points of the XL600 is the stator, although there is nothing wrong with the one on the bike I just bought, I wonder if it would be a good idea to buy a new one from Ricky Stators along with a NOS coil. Like I said the bike runs fine, and I hate to just throw $ at it needlessly, but for unquestionable reliability, should I remove and replace these items just to be sure?

if you have the extra $$$, ya. never worr y again. thought about rewinding it?

The question is where do you stop? That piston is just as old. Maybe the rings are worn out. What about the valve seals or the cam chain tensioner?

I'm firmly in the "if it's not broke don't fix it" camp. Yes, the stators do go over time, but it's not like they go 20,000 miles and fail every time.

One thing to know about the stators. Most of the aftermarket units are rewound stock stators. I think the Electrex ones may be new. If you get a Ricky or Baja Designs, the exciter coil may be older or have more miles on it than the one you have in your bike now.

Hmmmmmmmmm well me thinks maybe I save my dough and put some new skins on instead. I have never seen an old 70's XL stator fail yet, although the coils do go bad. Although I don't know if you can compare an old XL stator from the 70's to the latter 80 models. Although I would think the basic principal is the same.
