Complete bike teardown.. What to do???

I tore down my bike (wr426) to the frame yesterday... I had some questions for the omnipotent:

1. Do i need to replace bearings (swingarm, linkage, head, etc) or can I just pull and clean them?

2. I noticed some tiny rust spots on the frame, what can I do to protect it?

3. My subframe it a little tweaked, whats the best way to straighten (its off the bike)?

4. I am going to do the auto decomp cam and adjust the valves, anything else to look at while I tear the motor apart?

5. Any other suggested maintinance?

1. You might as well replace them all while it's apart. You might not "need" to, but it will only help

2. Have someone strip it and then powdercoat it to whatever color you want. Or just sand/ strip the rust, primer and paint it.

3. I've seen subframe straitening tools for sale at places like rockymountain.com. I'm not sure if they work or not. I would try to find a used YZ aluminum one on EBAY.

4. How far are you going to tear it apart? Just enought to do what you said, or to inspect everything? I would at least get a new piston/ rings/ gaskets/ hone/bore cylinder unless you have done that recently. You know give the top end a little refreshing.

5. Check the condition of all the clutch components while your at it, and check the connecting rod for any up and down freeplay on the crank if you decide to do the top end. There should not be any up and down freeplay and a little side to side but nothing excessive.

I know I'm suggesting quite a bit of money to spend, but you took your bike completely apart. If I were to do that I would expect to spend lots of dough.

Your bike will thank you for it.

I'll make it easy for you...Powdercoat the frame, get a new/used subframe, definitely change all the bearings. Then send the engine to Pro Circuit with a blank check and a note that says, "Make it perfect!". That's my game plane when it comes time for my tear down. But I'm filthy rich and money means nothing to me :confused:...SC

UMMM... I'm poor, i dont know if I can even afford new bearings right now... Now can anyone make recommendations on my problems?

If you are replacing cams then I would replace the timing chain since it is time amyway.

All you need is a timing chain and an ignition cover gasket. and a flywheel puller.

clean and repack all the bearings with grease. Spray some wd40 on the rust to keep it from rusting even more, and keep sraying it periodically. replace the timing chain when you do the 450 cam and sport the tweeked subframe. That's about the cheapest way you can go.

1 question though. Why would you strip the whole bike down just to put in a 450 cam?? Especially if you are poor like me

I didn't..... I wanted to go in and regrease everything, clean everything, and try to work on my subframe. I had a pretty bad getoff when I looped my bike in 4th gear (stupid me). I broke my left radiator, and bent the s-frame. So while the radiator is off to be fixed, I figure I would tear it all down, regrease and upgrade as much as possible.

A few more questions:

1. I also need to do my fork seals, is this a tough job? Special tools? recommended seals?

2. I need new chain and sprockets, anyone have any suggestions? The cheapest are Turner steel, any good?

3. Also i need a new chain slider... what brand will hold up?

I thought powder coating was the solution for a long time but there is one problem..... what do you do when (not if) it chips. You cannot touch it up. A better solution is to paint it with polyurethane paint. It is not as brittle as powder coating and when you chip or wear a spot off you can touch it up real easy. I painted my frame about three years ago and put polyurethane tape on the frame wear my boots rub and it is all holding up very well. Just a thought.. Good luck with the project!! An aftermarket subframe is about

$140-160. Check ebay and Motosport. I hear they hold up better than oem.

1. A small length 50mm pvc tube cut in half length ways is all you need.

2. DID 520V o-ring or 520VM x-ring chain and a set of JT steel sprockets. Will last a very long time.

3. TM Design works or OEM.
