86 Xl600r

I just bought a '85 Honda XL600R. about the only thing really broken on it, is the big chain slider on the swing arm. a replacement one is over $100. has anyone had luck making one out of a piece of nylon or other plastic. it also needs a battery. someone mentioned battery eliminators, is there a source for those ?

other then that, it seems like a really solid bike. in the past I have had Yamaha XT500/SR500/XT250 and Honda XR200R. I thought the XR200R was the most refined, and I think the XL600R is almost as nice, but more torque/horsepower and it's street legal. of course, all the emission on it is a pain (i.e. can't use a lot of the XR600R parts).

the 600 has a slightly more aggressive cam profile. some also say the cdi unit is more aggressive timing wise. the dual carbs weren difficult to sync.

Actually, the "syncing" of the dual carbs was a non-issue, I found when I went through my '83 in the first days after I got it for free...Honda made a plastic "bar" with approprite holes molded into it on either side in the ends that installed in the linkage between the two so that the second carb would start opening as the first carb approached 25% open, and then "look out", you were on both carbs from then on, and the rush of horsepower is very gratifying...

Just make sure that all the nooks and crannies and jets are completely clean before you try to start the beast...

The bar was just a spring loaded linkage to open the secondary carb with the primary.

It's a pretty simple setup where your only real adjustments are how far the second carb is opened and when it is opened. I'm working off memory of adjusting this a few months back, but I believe there's a screw with a jam nut you can use to adjust how far the second carb is opened at WOT and then a tab you can bend to adjust when it is actuated.

Recommended settings are around 20-25%. Under normal road riding, you'll hardly ever crack the second carb open, maybe around 70 mph or so you'll be just flirting with it from what I've experienced. This setup does a nice job of making the throttle very linear and controllable.

However, with the twin carbs the throttle pull is a little stiff.
