6 posts in this topic

hey guys,

went for a quick ride down the road, i came back home n leant the bike against the house. i went inside for about 5mins and came back out to find a small puddle of oil besides the front tyre. i looked at the forks and it seemd very oily, and left a ring of oil to where the shock had been compressed..

have my fork seals had it??? is it time for a new ones?? how can i tell if it iss???

cheers

You can tell when there's oil on the fork.

First, though, try pulling down the dust seal and running a piece of a tear off, or a piece of camera film up under the seal, running it around the fork and pulling downward as you go. This can remove dirt that may get caught under the seal lip, causing a leak.

If that doesn't work, it's time for seals.

What year is the bike?

I doubt that your bike has the original seals in it, but regardless, it sounds like they just need replaced. Yes, you can damage a fork by riding with no oil in it. If its just started leaking, then you'll probably be okay for one ride before a rebuild. I always rebuild both forks at the same time.
