Apparently everything. During a 200 mile training ride (thats what we tell the wives) The bike started to lose power and backfire. The problem ended up being the Carb disconnected from the airbox and I sucked some dirt. We fixed it and the ride continued but when we got in single track it started blowing black smoke, but I finished the ride and the bike still runs. But not very well...

Black smoke is too much fuel or weak spark. Those two point to the carb or ignition, which indicate something other than a blown engine. Have you even had the carburetor apart, or did you just hand it off to the "mechanic" to figure everything out?

Dang, area code 760? You out in Barstow or something?

I'm in Borrego Springs. About 15 Minutes from Ocotillo Wells. The engine is not blown. It still runs. There is a knock that was misdiagnosed as needing a valve adjustment. 3 times in 1500 miles. So I took in to a new shop to be diagnosed and they came back with a laundry list of parts. A new head, piston, Crank, valves, etc etc. The repair quote was 3700 dollars. I cant believe that much is wrong, but I dont want to spend any more on this bike. I bought it to prerun.

how's the countershaft? haha, but seriously.

could also use a clutch cover, and something in the trans is definately missing a gear tooth.... came out first time with the new magnetic drain plugs. Not exactly adding to my piece of mind d'oh.

It would also be nice to have a spare head to build.

I would be interested in the wheels, if you're going to part it out. Maybe the swingarm, too....

I'd possibly be interested in the frame, seat and tank depending on what you wanted for them.

I will keep it in mind. I just really want to sell it as a complete bike. I personally think the engine is rebuildable. The cylinder had some scratches. Nothing deep, and the piston had some carbon build up on top. Nothing that looked real bad. Now I have a qusetion for all of you gearheads. Can you really determine if an engine needs a new crank buy only removing the head? The con rod is still connected and there doesnt seem to be any excessive play or anything. It all seems to be in good shape. Lemme know. Thanks

In a word, no. The cylinder has to come off also. However, once again black smoke does not point to a crankshaft or bottom end failure. The shop that quoted you $3700 to fix "everything" is trying to rob you blind. :naughty:

HeadTrauma I believe the cylinder is off the motor. I also agree $3700 is way out of line. Buckshot44 if I lived closer I'd come over and inspect your engine and tell you exactly what you need. My complete engine for sale offer still stands if you change your mind.

agree with last 2 posts. need to look around for another shop. also like HT said, black smoke is not telling you to tear down the eng.
