426 vs 450

well I am looking into selling my raptor and getting back in to dirtbikes and there is a guy that wants to trade me a mint 2000 426 with a white bros pipe and another guy who wants to trade me a 2003 450. what are the pros and cons of both these bikes??Iam 15 years old and 6'1 and 135, but I have been riding quads and dirtbikes since I was about 8 and am very comfrotable on both.

thanks

2000 426:

*a little heavier, feels like it,

*hard to start if your not used to one

*5 gears

*stupid fun

03 450f

*feels nimble compared to 426 (still steel frame)

*4 gears

*stupid scarey fast (the untamed animal of the YZ's I do beleive)

*fast friend tells me he wishes it had 5 gears on fast tracks

Funny you post this. I am currently lookin at an 03 450f, and I have an 2001 426f. I really want that 03 too. I want something a little more nimble under me.

Oh, my question to you is, what is your plan for the bike?

I think personally I would go with the 03. if its in good condition.

I got a 2000 YZ426 and it is rock solid, couldn't ask for a better bike overall. With that said, I would go with the 03' due to the pure age of the 00' if nothing else.

Thats my thought as well, and it feels lighter, and the engine is just stupid sick

I realy want the 450 but if thaT DOESNT GO THROUGH i WIL ALSO BE VERY HAPPY TO GET THE 426. Ill be happy either way.

All things being equal, the 450 is a better bike mainly because it handles better, has more power and is newer. That being said, I would factor in the maintenance record of both machines. If the 450 has be thrashed and the 426 well taken care of, I might opt for the 426. If however, they are both well maintained it's a no brainer. Go for the 450.

As far as the bikes go. They are very similar in the way they feel and ride. The 450 will have a harder hitting motor that some people found to be a bit too much although I have not had a problem with it myself. It is very fast and a lot of fun to ride. The '03 YZF definately has the most aggressive motor of any 450 of any year or manufacturer. I put a 9 oz flywheel on mine because I do ride in the mountains with it and the stock hit was a bit too much for off road. Also, the 4 speed can limit you in some situations.

The 426 has a fantastic motor. It has great power and is adaptable to just about any situation. I would say the stock 426 motor adapts to more situations better than the 450 motor does.

The 450 is more nimble and lighter than the 426, but even so, the '03 isn't exactly a Ginsu knife when it comes to carving and slicing a corner. Both bikes (the 426 more so) have a top heavy feel and want to push in the corners compared to current 450's. They both are very stable and won't do anything scary in the handling department.

Good luck with your choice.

i have a 2000 426 on the original motor that still starts first kick, and i'm just getting ready to put the first new clutch in it! I am 6'6" 220lbs and i ride the crap out of it in the dirt and the dunes. I couldn't ask for a more solid bike.. ohhh yaaa, by the way, i have yet to be beaten by anyone on a yz450!!!!

you haven't raced an 07 yz450 yet have you.

Since your in CA, if you only ride tracks or rarely go trail riding then get the 450. But, if you ride trails then get the 426 because you'll get the Green Sticker allowing you to ride it all year round.

If you ride *both, get the 426....like me:)

:applause:

I am going to be happy either way, but I am hoping it goes through with the 450
