Throttle Stop, I think I cut too much but I'm very puzzled???

Last night I decided I was going to cut my throttle stop down to size, well I got it out of the bike and cut a little less then 16mm off put it back in and it seemed to me like I cut too much off. I measured what was left and it was around 10mm. Did I get a special throttle stop cause mine had pretty pink lock tight on it.? and it seemed to be long. When I measured it I didn't count the head of the bolt but did count the threads was I not supposed to count the threads?Thanks for any replies!

What makes you think you cut off too much? Actually, you should be cutting away more than you leave if I remember right.

You have to remember that the throttle stop cut the throttle travel in half! That's a lot of movement for the throttle wheel so it had to be long.

BTW, yours sounds like it's about right.

I think I took too much off because when I took the black cover off the carb and twisted the throttle all the way when it stopped the cables kept turning but the carb didn't open anymore.

I measured mine with the head before I cut it, 33mm before and 24mm after. So exactly 9mm were cut off. Mine had the pretty pink loctite too. The carb was off so the slide could be seen and this was just enough to get full throttle but no more.

Well what a deal I am more convinced now that I cut way too much off.Everyone said to cut off 16mm why is this if it is the wrong length? So you cut only 9mm off yours JD? How much is left all together?24mm right? Man does this mean I gotta get another stop?

Why is everyone saying to cut off 16mm then?

I believe James is right. Supposedly the TPS gets confused if this is cut too short, but that has been a debate as well. Some folks have removed it entirely and it felt great.

I would ride it like it is, try to notice any high-thottle opening running problems. With WR timing the power does tend to flatten out, but certainly not degrade. If you feel any kind of a problem, just buy the YZ426 stop-problem solved.

The 2000 model is different from the older models and you have to cut off a different amount. That caused a lot of confusion to begin with. Dirt Bike Magazine listed 16mm as the amount to remove for the 2k WR.

I think we need to figure this out now before anyone else modifies their 2k throttle stop.

I did some looking around through old posts and here is what I found.

there are 39.37 inches/meter. 1 meter = 1000 mm. 39.37/1000 = 1mm = .03937 inches.

(1/.03937 = 25.4mm/inch)

So, if measurements are accurate...

.91 x 25.4mm/inch = 23.114mm

33mm - 23.114mm = 9.886mm

*If* the measurements are accurate, the measurements were from the same points *and* the WR is the same as the YZ... you should remove 9.886mm.

At 16mm, mine hasn't caused a problem so try it before you order a new one.

Oh, and someone with the correct length throttle stop from the factory *please* measure the stupid thing so we know for sure.

BTW, if the .910 didn't include the head and the 33mm did then 16mm is pretty close... or is it the other way around. Oh hell this is making my brain hurt. :)

Well, I was looking at the initial review of the 2000 WR in Dirt Rider and they said to remove 8.8mm. :D But they also called it an air screw rather than a throttle stop. :)

Does it matter? Older WR electronics got confused if the throttle went too far and the bike would run poorly at full throttle. :D So far it seems the 2000 doesn't have this problem but I wouldn't assume every bike will work that way.

Careful! That information is for the 1999 and 1998 WR and the throttle stop specs are different.

Do yourself a favor and call Baja Designs , 1-800-422-5292 and order the YZ426 throttle stop like they suggest for your 2000 WR400. Maybe they can over night it to you and it'll be done.

Your bike is a y2k right?

Mine is also a 2000 WR, and the 9mm which was cut off is very close to the 8.8mm referenced by JamesD in the Dirt Rider article. Maybe the 16mm was for the 98/99WR's as Bryan suggested...

I just cut 9mm off the throttle stop on the y2k wr400, and it works perfect. Started with 33mm cut 9mm and have 24mm left. There is no comparison, its a much better bike with it gone.
