On the front of the frame behind the forks there should be the VIN plate. That should tell you the year. I think it is also in the series of VIN #s.

go to progressive.com and get an insurance quote on powersports and enter the vin when prompted. It will fill in vin, make, model, ect.

Get the VIN number off the the stearing head tube as others have stated.

Then Go Here and type the VIN in the Search by VIN box and click on the continue button.

You are correct. It won't recognise out of US VIN's. I missed that you were in the UK.

I'm not sure how to find the exact year based on the above style of vin number.

However, Kawasaki has a Letter and digit system in thier model to indicate the year. In the US this has nothing to do with the VIN. It is just the model.

KX250J-(1;2) = 1992;1993

KX250K-(1;2;3;4;5) = 1994;1995;1996;1997;1998

KX250L-(1;2;3;4) = 1999;2000;2001;2002

With your vin starting out as KX250J I would suspect that it is in fact either a 1992 or 1993. But, I'm not sure because there should be a number or letter in the VIN that defines the specific year. It still may be a 1995. The Kawasaki UK site does not offer a VIN search. Maybe call up a dealer in the UK and ask them.

KX250J-(1;2) = 1992;1993

KX250K-(1;2;3;4;5) = 1994;1995;1996;1997;1998

KX250L-(1;2;3;4) = 1999;2000;2001;2002

So a 1997 would read: KX250K4 XXXXXXXXXXXX

A 1997: the 10th digit of the VIN will be a "V"

VIN's were standardized in 1981 to 17 digit VIN's for all vehicles. The first digit is the country of origin (J=Japan, 1= USA, 2 = Canada, 3 = Mexico) so all our bikes (The good bikes at least) will start with a 'J'. Count to 10 from there..... this is the year code. It goes as follows:

1980 = A

1981 = B

1982 = C

1983 = D

1984 = E

1985 = F

1986 = G

1987 = H

1988 = J

1989 = K

1990 = L

1991 = M

1992 = N

1993 = P

1994 = R

1995 = S

1996 = T

1997 = V

1998 = W

1999 = X

2000 = Y

2001 = 1

2002 = 2

2003 = 3

2004 = 4

2005 = 5

2006 = 6

2007 = 7

2008 = 8

2009 = 9

I don't know yet what they are doing for 2010 but all will be the same.

I just checked the Kawi site, it has a 'Y' in the 10th digit which means 2000. If you want proof, I can PM the vin#. I'm curious if 2001 starts with 1 or 0
