XR650r top end condition after 28,000klms

7 posts in this topic

Firstly, after just taking the head off my Mitsubishi van I'll never whinge again about working on bikes. With 28,000 klms on the clock the XR's bore's cross hatching was like new, the fellow at Serco said he couldn't take my money for a 102mm sleeve and Wiseco piston, he suggested the condition was due to regular oil and air cleaner maintenance, I use a semi synthetic either ShellVSX, Motul 5100 or Silkolene at 1500 intervals. I don't baby her either which was evident by the condition of the inlet valves which have hammered themselves to death and will need to be replaced, this is due high RPM but in my case not so much revving the ring out her but sustained speeds of around 100-120 Kph from of the adventure type riding I do. Everything else looked good, so it's a couple of valves and a new set of rings which should see her for another 30,000 klms.

We need that same kind of durability out of the "next XR" or big CRF. That's amazing!

I feel regular oil changes with a good synthetic is the trick! I'm a big believer in good maintenance.

Thats a good run you've got out of the big girl mate. Try and get quarter of that out of the trusty CRF's!

i do a drain and fill on my bike every month while riding in the summer. at the end of the season it gets a new oil filter along with fresh oil. at a capacity of on ~2L, you'd be an idiot not to change it.

even using the most expensive oil it is cheap insurance.

Wow! That's 17,500 miles! I don't want to start an oil war but i've been using HONDA 20/50W all year long. Currently desmogged, de snorkled, 158/55 jetting, dave's mods, FMF muffler, UNI filter, stock gearing. Should i switch to synthetic then? Which one? Weight?
