YZ426F vs. 250-2stroke

I am in the market to buy a new bike. I have been looking at used 98-02 250 2-stroke mx'ers and have found a few in my area (Sacramento). Recently though I have been researching the 00-02 YZ426F and have found that it is a very nice bike. I looked on craigslist and there are a ton of the 426's for right around 2000-2500 (which is my price range). I am looking for a bike that I can go to the MX track and practice (not race), ride trails, singletrack, and then possibly try and race a harescramble or two. I am 185lbs. and 5'10". I was wondering what some of you guys would go with (understanding that there will be some bias). I have usually stayed away from 4-strokes due to reliabillity issues I have read about, but this 426 sounds like the ticket. Any help would be appreciated.

These things are stone reliable my friend. Especially the 426, they do involve some maintenance, but so does everything else.

The 426 is bulletproof. I also have a 250 2T and it takes more maintenance than the 426 does.

I dont know about the 426 but I have a '99 YZ250 and that bike is bullet proof. I have had to do nothing on it and it runs beautiful. The bike has plenty of power and has never let me down, and its less $

i would also look at the 1998 and 1999 YZ400F.

they can be found pretty cheap and they are also very bullet proof. the 400's are kind of heavy but they do a great job on the trails and they got enough power to move you pretty well on the track (for practice purpose)

I found one in Stockton (on Craigs list) with a lot of extra and upgrades for $2200. Right now, I am redoing the suspension for me (race tech). I cant wait till it comes back so i can ride the hell out of it.

You said it... The 426 is your ticket. A much better all around bike than a 250 2-Stroke. IMO

Having owned all of the above bikes, I'd suggest the 250 2t, any day, over the 426. The yz250 has an excellent motor and makes a better track bike and a better woods bike than the 426.

I've had the 02 version of both bikes as well. If you are considering either bike in a green sticker I would get an 02. There were good mods that year for both.

My favorite: My current 02 YZ250 2 Stroke with a Gnarly pipe and an 11 oz flywheel. I found the 426 top heavy and not as easy to throw around in the woods. For desert rides both are very good with the 426 having a little more hill climing power. But, I do just fine on the 250 2T. It has a lot of torque with the Gnarly.

So, it depends on what you like. If you don't mind a slightly heavy bike go with the 426. It's a beast and great on steep climbs. Just don't drop it!

If you want a bike that feels much lighter and is easier in the tight stuff then the 250 2t is the ticket. Just remember, if you get a 250 they are faster than H#LL unless you do the flywheel weight and/or get a Gnarly pipe. Don't think becasue it is a 250 that its a lot slower. They haul some serious butt with a rev pipe and no flywheel. Without the mods they rev so quicky it's like strapping a rocket to your butt.

I had a 46 Knucklehead and 66 shovel, too, but wouldn't want to ride either on the track. I think the xr650 is a little heavier than the knuck and all three are easier to start than a 426:D :thumbsup:

my 426 starts just as easy as my xr250

i bout a 400 about a month ago and love it. i like being able to fill it up on the way to ride witj out having to worry about mixing gas. i was very worried about starting issues but i have never kicked it mor than 2 times. usualy just takes one kick. i rode with a yz250 this past week and i do feel like it was a little better in the tight stuff but i had no problem keeping up.

I have an 03 YZ450F that I really like and have had no trouble at all (knocking on wood) and that includes hot starts. So I think everyone agrees that reliability isn't an issue.

And recently, I picked up an 01 RM250 that has some mods and is for sure a rocket and a lot of fun.

The 450 is easier to ride and probably makes me personally faster but the 250 is, like I said, a blast with that top end hit but requires more work (shifting, braking , etc). I think it comes down to preference because either one will be fast and fun.

I used to ride 2 strokes alot, drove/owned many of them, i thaught they were the best bikes, UNTILL i got my yz426f, its a 01, and after being on that id never go back to a 2 stroke, and im only 120 pounds and about 5'9''. Yea its a bit top heavy but i wouldnt go back to a 2 stroke again.I jump on 2 of my buddys 2 strokes the other day,(99 yz250, 2003 kx250) and i couldnt stand them at all, thaught they were useless compared to the thumpers, now the 426 is a bit tricky to start , but its worth it , once u gets the routine down 1-3 kicks and it will start everytime.Plus gas and go is a nice bonous as well.

I am 5'11" and weigh bout 185 as well. I rode 2 strokes as a kid, but I now have an 02 426. I couldn't be happier. I ride track a couple times a week, and ride desert/trails all winter. Great all round bike, and yes- its bulletproof. Never had any starting issues either. I ride with a group that has 5 of these bikes, and everyone that owns one loves it. No problems. Don't judge the 426 until you do the BK mod. Then, there's no comparison. I was split 50/50 between my YZ250WR (2T) and my 426 until I added a flywheel weight and did the BK mod. Now I'm selling the 2T.

I love my 02 426 and I haven't even done the mods yet. Starts first kick. Runs great. I only use it for trail riding. It actually feels light compared to my previous bike, an XR400. Thumpers are not as difficult to work on as you think. You have tons of knowledgable people here to help you too!

I like my '03 450f for track and trail, light, quick and fun... only problem is no head light for night riding.:thumbsup:

as I posted yesterday, yesterday?? all the starting problems on my 426 are history with the addition of the Edelbrock carb! I spent today working on my 500 and taking short bursts out on the 426, can't keep my hands off of it!

i too just made the switch from a 98 rm250 to a 2001yz426. and the 426 is amazing....its less maintenance, so i get to ride more. the power is awesome, and i like the suspension better. i really dont think i'll be going back to the smokers. the 4stroke just hits...allllll the time. i catch myself wheeli-ing all the time now, its just got crazy power and response. i love it! you wont be sorry
