03 450 price

the neighbor has an 03 yz450f with maybe 20 hours on it. show room looking. basically never rides it. i need a bike for the track. should i jump on this for around 3 grand or less or try a 2 smoke. any ideas

I picked up my 03 yz450 for $2500 in great condition about 2 months ago. After the research I did, I found the 03's going for up to $4000 in stock, good condition. That's here in CA. If you get it for less than 3k, I'd say go for it.

Not sure about your market but here in denver that bike is no way worth 3 grand. $2500 tops. Do some research on the 2003 here at TT. Great bike but it was the first year of the 450 and is a pretty difficult bike to ride compared to other years but can fixed for cheap.

I just picked up a brand new 05 yz450 for 4,000 out the door. They still have a 04 YZ450 for around 3,800.

I have an 04' model.....

The 03' had the nastiest "hit" of all the yz450f models...i.e. it has a hard-hitting powerband, that will pull your arms off. For 2004, the powerband was calmed down slightly, by changing the igniton mapping.

The 03' is a great bike, but suspension wise, it's inferior to the 04' and later bikes, and the 03', 04' and 05' models are all steel-framed, and don't handle as well as the 06' and 07' models, tending to be top-heavy feeling. This can be helped by using an aftermarket linkage, that changes the geometry, and makes the bike feel less top-heavy and makes the bike turn better (Stormlink).

I'll list the Pro's/Con's of the 03':

Pro's:

1) Very reliable, "bulletproof" engine..just keep the oil changed, air filter clean, and normal maintenance, and she'll run a long time.

2) Wicked acceleration....sometimes too much for the track since the bike will tend to tire your arm's out.....can be helped with an aftermarket heavier flywheel.

Con's:

1) 03', 04' and 05' bikes don't handle/turn as well as the 06' and 07' models, can be helped somewhat with the Stormlink, but it's still not going to handle as well as an 06' and 07' period.

2) 03' had the smallest fork tubes, and the poorest suspension of the 03'-07' years....nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't compare to the 06'-07' models.

If you can get it for about $ 2600 or so, I'd go for it, unless you want to spend the big dollars for an 06'-07'

$2900 and I would do it
