XR600 Spark Plug Removal

I might be the odd one out but I've noticed that removing the spark plug from my XR600 is a bit tricky and since I have fitted an Acerbis Long Range Tank, it is now an absolute pain in the ass, so much so I avoid even attempting to remove and check the condition of the plug.

Is there an easier way or a specific plug remover for this task?

At the moment I just use a standard plug socket wrench

i feel your pain. I have a larger tank as well so I end up pulling it before changing out the plug to make things easer. I use a spark plug wrench (a tall cheap one with the holes at the top) to remove the plug. My automotive spark plug wrench's don’t fit as easily and seem a bit cumbersome in comparison.

The plug wrench that comes with the bike's tool kit works best. Don't forget to blow the accumulated dirt and crud away from the spark plug base before removal.

I don't have an oversized tank but I know it is a complete pain to change a plug without the right wrench for that bike. Not too expensive to get but well worth the money!

Actually the best plug wrench to use is the one that came with the XR400, it is a hinged design and works very easily even with my Acerbis 5.8 tank.

Like Creeky said, the one that comes with the bike works the best. All the aftermarket ones (Sockets and such) are too thick to fit into the hole. :)

I had to use the wrench that came with the toolkit in the saddlebag. Ordering it will run you about $20. All normal 18mm sockets are too thick in diameter and cant fit into the well. the plug remover that comes with the bike works just fine.

I bought a cheap 18mm plug socket and turned it down to fit. The socket was like $4 and I have used a metal lathe. my 2 cents.:)

If your going to buy one from Honda , the one for the XR400 works better than the one for the XR600. I have both and always use the one for the 400 because of the hinge and it uses a 14mm wrench instead of a screw driver to turn it. You have more angle options with the wrench than you do with a screw drive and the holes.

Just to confirm, when you say the 400 is better because of the HINGE, I take it that it is not the ordinary long reach socket for the 400 that can be turned with either a spanner or a ratchet?

It's just Ive been looking on the web and most of the 400 plug tools I can find are just that but I'm interested in this hinged one because of the oversize tank I have.

The hinged one is the one that came with my 96 XR400 when I bought it new. It is about the same lenght as the one that comes with the XR600.

It can be turned with a 14mm wrench or a ratchet and socket. I have an IMS 4.7 and Acerbis 5.8, it works with both tanks perfectly.

My 18MM $nap-On socket was thin enough to fit w/out mods to socket

yeap coolidge is right, an off brand 18mm long shaft from advanced auto fit with a little socket extender on an 3/8 drive..$5.95

I've got a plug socket from Autozone. It has a swivel extension attached to the back of the socket.
