Chain and sprockets sync

I do not know if it will actualy make everything last longer but, there was a study and it was said, that if all was new and the sprockets were out of sync then as a whole everything would last longer. I have not studied this myself but, run mine 15/48 most of the time. The sprockets last forever but, that might have something to do with them being Ironman sprockets.

If both sprockets are odd or even then the same link on the chain will always land on the same teeth on each sprocket as it comes around. 14/48 and the chain links and sprocket teeth will always be in sync but, if it is 15/48 then they will be out of sync and the chain is said to last longer, because the the chain link will change what tooth it lands on each time around. 15/45, 15/47, 15/59, 14/46, 14/48, in sync; 15/46, 15/48, 14/45, 14/47, 14/49 out of sync.

On the XR650R I got rid of the stock worthless junk as fast as I could. I run a XR's Only case guard for a 15 tooth CS sprocket (I have a 14 tooth as well that I do not use anymore)

I'll check my log and see what kind of milege I got out of 14/47 vs the 14/48. I've used the same brands and chain type.

Mathematicly, part of the calculated wear result depends on the length of the chain also. The chain length plays a role in the rotational equations. This effects when a particular tooth contacts the same link within a certain number of rotations.

Whether all this really amounts to anything significant, it's hard to tell.

If you look at the chart for a 110 link chain, it appears the 14 tooth counter shaft sprocket and 47 rear should have the best potential for longer life.

14\48 4130 miles and 14\47 was 5K and 14\47 again at 3300 miles and 14\47 again at 4700 miles. I changed the 3300 mile time early to get ready for a Baja ride so it looks like the odd combo does last a bit longer. 14\48 is a little better for me all around though and gives better drive in the whoops. 15\48 is good for speed but I have a problem with it in gnarly rox with not lugging to well.
