Oil Filter- cleaning possible?

I have a 99' 400. I'm about to change the oil for the first time, and bought an oil filter from the Yamaha dealer. $16!!!! :thumbsup:

I noticed it has a metal mesh filter element, and not paper. Is this filter able to be cleaned?

Sorry if this is a retarded question, I'm still new to dirt bikes.

There are two types of filters. There's a stainless or brass metal mesh and then there's the pleated paper. The paper ones can't really be cleaned. The metal ones, that's what they're for, re use. DId your bike come with the metal mesh one? The one from the dealer that I get is about $16 for the paper throw away kind. I assume the one in your bike that you took out is metal mesh? If so count yourself lucky, you're set.

You can clean the metal mesh filters. Spray some carb cleaner thru it and lightly (real lightly) blow it off with compressed air. Once its dry you can reinstall it.

Some of those brass filters are a bit fragile I have heard.

But you can buy a pretty tough stainless steel filter that will last as long as your bike does.

I clean mine every oil change. Cleaned it today in fact.. :applause:

The brass elements are a poor choice. They are, as mentioned, too delicate to be cleaned more than a couple of times, and were never intended to be reused, regardless of what anyone tells you. They don't filter even half as well as the stainless elements, like the Scotts, either. The Scotts will last indefinitely; one of mine is 4 years old.

But, if you want to settle for second best, use a good paper element, like one for an '03 or later YZ450. Aftermarket filters of this type can be bought for far less than what you just paid.

OK, thanks for all the info. The one I removed, and the one I bought were both metal. Copper color, so I'm assuming they are the inferior brass filters. I will look into a stainless one next time around.

However, all this info is moot, since I crushed some oil fitting re-installing it. Bike is no more for who knows how long. I will start another thread here in a few, to see how screwed I am.
