Trying to get black rims

As a reward for behaving on a 500 mile Mexico trip last week, my BRP is entitled to some new black rims (also ordering black rear fender and side panels)... :bonk:

Excel seem to be the most popular. I've never ran aftermarket rims before so I don't know what I need. I'm guessing rims, spokes, and hubs should be ordered pre assembled (I've no clue how to lace a wheel ) and I'll just reuse my rotor. The OEM wheels will either be ebay'd or kept for motard use.

Any insight would be helpful. I assume stock sizes are what I should stay with (stock tire sizes work for me). I'm also open to suggestions on where to buy etc...

Since your bike is an 07- you could even reuse your spokes.

No problem with the stock hubs.

If you reuse your spokes- relacing is very easy. Just get the dishing right.

Lay it on the bench, prop the wheel in place, loosen the nipples and remove with a drill/driver.

The back wheel will look like crap in no time though. The anodizing will wear off quickly- especially in sand.

Excels are the next best- in my opinion to the stock DID's.

I have done that once for the look.

Looks cool but I would not do it again. The "bling" wears off.

One other thing the black anodizing will not hold up at all, will look good for a week. The gold however seems to be much more durable, I have them on one bike and you get used to the shiny, and they do look trick with a gold hub, anyway they have been on almost two years now and still look almost brand new. There are different grades of wheels that are available I reccomend getting the heavier guage wheels they are much more durable and less prone to bending or cracking, when your desert riding I am certain you dont want a DNF due to a bent rim. The stock DID rims are very durable, and truthfully are hard to beat. Now if you were mx riding a lighter gauge rim would be sufficent. Easier to push the bike back to the truck at a mx track than from who knows where in the desert. Good luck let us know what you do!

Those are nice but if you send them your stock hubs you could save yourself about $400.00 off those.

Yeah REBEL hes asking about rims only NOT whole wheels and new brakes and new sprockets I live in CA desert and have NEVER bent a stock rim they are strong enough If you hit something that hard to bend a stock your gonna beat any other rim up also I think the blacks would look bitchen Do what you want Junkie its your bike and your money

Not to bust your bubble there Denn, but I was responding to the question he asked, not speculating that he only meant rims! And I agree the black rims look really good the finish just does not last very long :D

Its a free country man, I have always appreciated getting a bit more info than just the lame responses I see around here, especially lately!

One more thing, the rad hubs are made from billet and are far stronger than the stock cast aluminum hubs! Junkie, all advise should be taken with a grain of salt and a heaping tablespoon of common sense. :bonk: Take care and good luck finding the "rims" you are after. I just got Sun Rims. For some reason the shop I went thru said Excel Rims weren't available in black. Also, another specialty shop said the same thing. Don't know if they are any different, but Sun cost more than Excel.

Thanks! That's what I was looking for, a "turn-key" setup so I can maybe spoon some street rubber onto the stock wheels. Right now I gotta deceide between carbon fiber exhaust for my ST or black rims for the XR. I can prolly hide one, but the wife would surely notice two large holes in our checkbook...:D

I agree, I think black rims really set a bike off. While I wouldn't be happy if the black wears off a $900 setup, I'd live with it as my bikes tend to get used. Sure, they're maintained well, but they have to earn it... :naughty:
