Selling the 03 YZ450....How much to ask?

29 posts in this topic

I bought my Yamaha YZ450 new in 03 and have ridden it as a cow trailer,

never got big air or anything that would resemble race conditions....My question is how much do you sell this bike for? It has a top triple clamp,

good bars, Dr.D front brake line, hot start lever, o-ring chain, larger rear gear,

WB E-series pipe, gripper seat, Stealthy flywheel, runs and starts great.

But what is it worth? I just got one of the crf150s and just don't ride the 450 much anymore......

$2,200 is all the "steelies" are getting around here. Maybe $2,500 on the west coast?

Sell all the aftermarket goodies on ebay or something and put the bike back to stock and sell it for $2500-2700. Someone who is buying an 03 is not going to be that worried about all the aftermarket stuff

That's a toss-up. If you sell the stuff on e-bay, you'd get less than half what you spent on it. If you leave it on the bike, it really won't add half the value of the goodies to the sale price, either, but it very well may make the bike sell faster, or make someone choose yours instead of a more nearly stock one at the same price.

WOW, thats pretty amazing how much value was lost....I might as well hang on to the thing.....I sure couldn't replace it for anything even close to that used

price.....My 150 even cost more than the cherry 450 is worth.....Oh well..

Thanks Japan......

It's not Japans fault, it's a freakin dirt bike. It's a 4 year old dirt bike.

Thanks for what? Making progress? For finally taking the YZ450 out of the mold of being a refinement of the 1998 YZ400? :naughty:

I'm in exactly the same boat, but I'm just making plans to be able to get <$2k for my '03 when I upgrade. :bonk:

Yeah your probably right, although it doesn't make sense to me that if the "four year old dirt bike " sat in the garage for two and a half years that it should be worth the same as a "Dirt bike " that was beat to death every weekend and never serviced or taken care of....now does it? Japan has been blowing out "Dirt Bikes " since 1968 that keep getting to cost more and more and more every year....My 07 CRF 150 cost me 4500.00 bucks and in three years it will be worth what....1200.00 maybe..I just said thanks Japan because I have owned a bunch of bikes in my time (58 to be exact) an the

Jap bikes have held their value less than any other bike on the market...So like I said, THANKS JAPAN...

Consumers control the price, not the producers. If the price was too high new, nobody would buy them and the pice would have to drop. If people are will ing to pay for it, the price will continue to go up for new bikes.

No, but by the same token, a brand new '04 in the crate probably can't hope to bring a price greater than a nice clean used '06, what with all of the advancements that have been made to the bike.

Yours IS worth more than a beater, but that might only be reflected in the speed at which it sells. The high price of everything in general has kind of distorted the look of things, too, I think. I bought a '73 Maico 450 new, and when I sold it, I got just shy of $1000 less than I paid for it. But, that was still half of its new price. Then too, when that bike sold, it was still at the current cutting edge. These days, and especially in the case of the steel framed YZF's progress happens at a much accelerated pace compared with the 60's and 70's you and I remember so well. That, the Japanese can be blamed for.

Damn, I bought mine for 3100 a year ago and I thought I was getting a good deal. I only got 20 hours on it before it blew up too!

I have an 03 yz450f. Cherry. I'm no big air guy either. I just changed off the stock rear tire on the bike and it's replacement is 80% tread if that gives an idea of the hours on it in 4 years. Full exhaust , bars, good chain, sprockets, XGX graphics, maintained to the gills. Man I can't get any action at all and I mean none at $2800. No calls, no interest. It's going to eventually sell for less than $2500 I fear probably about $2200 if I want to get rid of it. I've advertised it on TT, locally, craigslist, not ebay yet. Of course when I bought the 06 I have, I paid $3300 for it. Ridden but not abused.

Wow some of the states you guys live in suck for retail. Here in washington I've been seeing 03s go for $3000-$3500. Some 04's are in the $4000-$3500 range. Bikes around here retain their value better than most states some reason.
