Front sprocket play

6 posts in this topic

I've done a search and found out the front sprocket always has some play on the shaft. Is it possible for the sprocket to fall off the shaft ? I have installed a new 14 tooth from SprocketSpecialists and it is the first time I have done this to my '06 650L.

Really doubt it especially with that retainer ring that is offset and bolted to the sprocket. Make sure you use locktite on those two bolts.

I have a 1995 xr650l, I spun the sprocket on the shaft about 2000 miles ago, now its messed up again and at the shop, I had it apart this weekend and it seems like the shaft has damage, I don’t know if the retainer ring will work anymore. When I had that done lat time it cost me around $1500, the shaft that was installed then was said to be a revised part made out of a tougher material. I also installed a new chain and sprockets at the time. I hate to say it but now I’m considering welding the sprocket on and dealing with the whole mess at a later time. If you have any ideas on this or find out something that would help me please let me know. Good luck!

Yes it is.

Mine has some play as well, and I am considering buying one as a spare.

I bet it is a job to change out though.
