newer style gas tank on an 02 yz426?

10 posts in this topic

I really like the style of the (2006, 2007)new gas tank and radiator shrouds so i was wondering if anyone has tried the conversion on a 2002 yz426f and how do you do it if its possible.

I'm pretty sure this isn't possible. At least not in a practical sense. The 426 has a completely different frame than the '06-'07 bikes. Not only in material, but also in basic geometry and form. If you were to attempt it, you would need not only a new tank and shrouds, but also a new seat, rear fender, air box, air boot, subframe and side panels. The chances of these parts fitting on a 426 are about zero.

People have been able to update the 426 plastic to the '03-'05 plastic without too much problem, but those years had very similar frames and required only minor modification to make the change. That wouldn't be the case with the '06-'07 bikes.

Not possible, unless you intend to cut out the center of the '06 tank so the back of it will sit down over the older frame.

Go to the shop and buy a new tank surounded by an aluminum framed bike and it will fit perfectly :applause:

Does anyone know if a '03-'05 tank will fit on a 426?

I know people do the whole 450 plastic swap, but would just the tank fit without any other changes?

Obviously I'd need the shrounds. What about the seat. Will a 426 seat be compatible (or fit close enough) with the newer tank?

I did some reading thru the 450 body swaps and it doesn't look like it would work very well. Apparently the 450 tank fits the frame, but the 426 seat won't fit the tank. And a 450 seat won't fit the the 426 subframe, so you'd need a 450 subframe. Still curious how far off the 426 seat is from fitting the 450 tank, but it sounds like too much a hassle for what I wanted to do.

The 450 plastics swap is for pre-2006 450 plastics only. Satch did an extensive post in this forum. Do a search for this.

Yes but you will also need an 03/5 subframe, shrouds, side panels, and airbox. The rear master cylinder will need to be replaced or a mount made for the res.
