93 XR650L - 18,000 miles - $2300 - Buy/Not Buy?

Just bought 1998 xr650l. $1300 spent on top end of engine.New $400 carb New Excel rim. Supertrap stainless pipe. New handlebars New tires. New seat cover. New chain and sprockets. 300 miles on rebuild 4000 on bike paid $2300 Runs very good handles in loose dirt very bad.

OK, in a similar dilemma here. I have a line on a 93 XR650L for $1200. 20K miles. I already have an incredible dirt bike. I want this one to use on a easy 14 mile round trip commuting on rural roads.

No engine work done yet. Owner adjusts valves by hand and will show me how to do it too. All usual easy maintenance done but no engine work. Very occasional off-road riding. 95% street miles. Has title. Everything works. No road rash. Bigger clarke tank and skid plate.

How long will this bike last (relatively and approximately) before I need to do a serious engine overhaul?

just depends on the maintenance history. does it smoke?

Very slight smoke at start up (barely visible but you can smell it faintly). Once warm, no smoke. No top end done ever. Valves adjusted regularly but need it again now.

Not buy.

The early ones, like my '93 had troubles with 2nd/3rd gear. It's an expensive fix.

You should be able to find a '96 or newer for the same money.

Kelly Blue Book lists these at $1715 in this region. Many dual sport sellers mark up from there (in this locale).

What is the typical life for one of these engines based on minimal but adequate maintenance?
