250f or 450f?

Hey, Im looking at getting a new 2007 bike, definately Yamaha. I currently ride a 2000 426 with a jacked clutch, and a bunch of problems. Im not the fastest rider by any means, probably decently slow by most standards, but I want a bike I can get better on, as the 426 is a lost cause at this point. I am 5'10, ~180lbs. Should I go for a 250f, or a 450f?

Go with the big dog. If you're going from a 426 you might be disappointed in a 250, even though the 250 is an awesome machine. The power difference between the 450 and the 250 is huge, and the weight is noticeable but not by much. Just my opinion.

I am slow on the track also, and loved my YZ250F. The light weight made it a lot easier for me to recover from the mistakes I would make. And, I could actually twist the throttle and not get in too much trouble! I was competitive in the 38+ OTHG Beginner class against the 450's, but I got smoked in VetX Beginners. I am about to turn 43, am 6'8", weigh 215 pounds, and have a 450F. As a low level motocross rider, the 450F makes it a lot easier for me to jump the little jumps that I actually attempt because I just twist the throttle and make it over. I don't ride that much anymore and sometimes I think it's because the 450F is not as much fun for me. Riding the 250F felt like riding a mountain bike. It was a lot of fun...and that's why I ride. I guess what I am saying is I don't think you can go wrong with a 250F.

450 is raw brute power, too me i love the unbrideled power, but not as easy to throw around, 250 considerable less power but more nimble and easier to control. 450= +power 250= more control less power, It all depends which works better for you. ps 450 also depends on your riding skill, its alot of bike

here's another thought.... your a "bigger" guy, like myself, and you have developed a comfort zone on your 426. your used to holding on for dear life when only giving half thottle to that beast. now get on a 250f... you'll be giving way more throttle to get a fraction on the power that your used to. this could possibly lead to excessive drive train wear.

plus... 250f's are for pansi's...

Haha, I never considered half throttle holding on for dear life... But Ive never been a fast trail rider at all, and pinning the 426 is on a lake bed or closed street.

The 2006 or 2007 450F is significantly lighter and has smoother power delivery than a 2000 426F. I went from a 2002 WR250F (converted to MX) to a 2006 YZ450F. The 450F feels lighter and the power is not jumpy - it is there when I need it - which gives me more confidence. The suspension is WAY better than my 2002 and your 2000 426. I am almost 43, weigh 170# w/o equipment and have been riding 3 years.

I would buy a new or slightly used 2006 YZ450F for around $4500 instead of paying $6500 for a new 2007.

Also smoother than any of the earlier YZ450's. The '06 was called flat, lazy, and/or soft when it first came out, and it doesn't feel to have the snap the earlier ones did. It's a masterpiece of illusion and ignition control, IMO. The thing is that I ride my '03 in close company with my '06 all the time, and the only thing you get out of the more aggressive low end power of the '03 is the need to pay more attention to the throttle. It isn't one bit faster or quicker than the "sluggish" '06 in any situation. Again, this is a side-by-side, comparative observation, not an impression.

The end result is that the '06/7 YZ450F may be one of the easiest bikes to ride ever built with this much power. Easier, in many ways, even than the '05 YZ250F was. People ride the '03, and they come back wide eyed, and say, "wow, what a beast", and stuff. They ride the '06, and I have to go chase them down to get the bike back. I find them with a huge smile on their face, and saying stuff like, "This is fun".

precisely the reason why i bought an 07 yz450f. i've been a 250f loyalist since 02. i have spun laps on friends 450's over the years and was never overly impressed. i disliked the heavy feel, extra crank inertia and instant on throttle response. but i decided to make the switch at the end of 06. rode all the 07's pretty thoroughly and picked the yz. its the 450 that shares some 250f characteristics that sold me.

Just an update - I went with the 2007 YZ250f, and am honestly glad I did. After riding the new 250, I dont know if it actually is, but it definately feels a lot fast than m,y 426, even in a straight line. I am perfectly content with the power it has, and I think I would have been scared by a 450. Thanks for the advice.

For most of us a 250F isn't enough but the 450 is too much at times. It's always better to have too much than not enough!

Here's another thought; A 250F with a big bore kit is a blast to ride as it has much more torque than a stocker but you lose some over-rev. I had my '03 250F with a bigger piston for 2 years with no problems and loved it.
