Much difference b/w 426 and 450

Is there that much of a difference b/w the 2? If you were to start racing with the 426, would the 450's have much of an advantage?

I had an 02 426 and my bud got an 03 450. Yeah, I would say there was a noticeable difference. The 450 felt lighter and the engine definitely had more snap to it. It turned better and the suspension was better as well. That difference, especially the suspension, is going to be more and more pronouced as you get into the new bikes. The 426 is a good bike but the new 450s are better. I will say that I have never ridden a bike that as stable jumping as the 426.

I would think that you put two average riders on those bikes it would be close. The newer 450s are easier to ride which I think is mostly related to the better power delivery and better suspension. I have an '02 426 with a 450 cam which helps smooth out the power and I am very happy with it. The only thing I miss is the aluminum frame which I thinks is much more modern looking (my last bike was a '97 CR250 which had an aluminum frame).

Based on my skill level I don't think I would be any faster on a new bike and I am satisfied with the suspension-I have never ridden a YZ450 so I am only speaking from what I have heard and not actual experience. I do also own a 2005 YFZ450 quad (my wifes bike:thumbsup: ). I don't really compare the two since they are entirely different machines.

I started racing last year in the Vet Beginner class with a 426. It's been a great bike and I never felt at a disadvantage when I raced. I bought a 2006 450 last month and all I can say is that it is a lot easier to ride. Smoother power, better cornering. I still think the 426 is a great bike and that you can be competitive with it in the beginner and novice class, but once you ride a 2006-2007 Yz 450 you realize that these bikes have come a long way and make it a lot easier to go fast and ride smoother at the same time.

I agree completely with you Bleetham, and it is ironic that we either own and or owned the same models, considering our age!!! Just thought I would show you my generational Yamaha pics. 1st is a '99 & 2nd is my current 426-450.

Thanks for sharing Jeff. I'll bet we're not alone when it comes to going the 400 - 426 -450 route. I'm keeping my 426 as my trailbike and my 450 for racing. One of these days I'll get some pictures up.

well I think so, between a 2002 426 and a 07 450...there is no comparision...there was a gap between the 02 and the 03 450...but now...there is a gaping hole the size of texas between a 98/99 and a 07.

I took my 426 on a trail riding trip to Fl last year, and I was not to happy with the way it rode. Kinda pushed alot and my suspension was all off for that type of riding. Felt kinda harsh over roots and obstacles. I used to own a 125 for the woods, and am now going to build a YZ144 and keep the two YZF's strictly for the track. I just think that little two stroke is alot more fun and forgiving in the single track/tight stuff.
