Fork Seal Blown After Crash??

Hey Guys

Had my first crash last weekend. Went down pretty good, jammed the front end on a rock, nothing serious, my footpeg took most of the brunt of it.

Anyway, i went for a ride today and the front end a little stiffer then usual.

I also noticed at the end of the day that my fork seal was leaking some oil, a decent amount. I removed the boot and couldnt "see" it leaking when i compressed it but there was definitely oil there. :lol:

Any chance bottoming out the front end blew some oil by the seals and all is well now?

Any ideas on what to look for? I have never messed wirh Forks before so this will be a learning experience!

It may have blow the seal. It is also possible that some dirt got pushed in there. You can always try cleaning off the oil and see if it still leaks. If it is still leaking it will be easy to tell.

A leaking seal doesn't make the fork stiff. Perhaps they twisted in the clamps a bit. You can try loosening the clamps and the front axle. Twist the parts around a little and then re-tighten them.

Yes, this was apparent as soon as i rode the bike again since the crash.

They did twist some and needed to be tweaked back into place!

I was curious if that would cause a leak and if so, WHY? Would rotating in the seal really leak or could something be damaged?

I cant figure it out for the life of me!

My guess would be you've slightly bent one or possibly both tubes. In my 30+ years of bike repair/maintainance have I ever heard or seen a fork seal "twist" for any reason, not saying it can't happen but I doubt this is the problem. A bent tube would cause the sliders to bind as they move resulting in the "tightness" you describe and the seal wouldn't remain in contact with the distored tube as it moves and leak as a result.

It doesn't take much of a bend to cause this with the tollerances in today's suspensions. You'll need V-blocks and a Dial Indicator to check this. Support the fork legs at each end and rotate the inner tube with the dial indicator at a point above the seal. Don't let the lower/outer tube rotate, just the upper/inner. Look for any deflection. Ideally you should dissasemble the forks and just check the inner tube at the middle point but you can do it as I've decribed to see if a complete teardown is nessesary.:lol:
