WR450 SM Conversion

Okay, here's the plan:

Grab a 2007 WR450 and convert it into a street-legal SuperMoto. Can anyone give me tips on what I need to get to complete the conversion?

I have a short list but since I've never done this before, I thought I'd ask all you professionals out there before I make a mistake.

Here is my list with the appropriate questions:

1. I know I need 17" rims, spokes and hubs. What width size do I get for the front and rear? Is it 3.5" and 5.0"?

2. 320MM front disc rotor. But how do I get radial brakes on it? DO I have to get new forks too?

3. LOUD exhaust.?

What else do I need to consider? I'll be riding this in the Philippine Islands and will probably use it as city bike to get around town quickly; and, to play with/

why don't you buy one of the aprilia supermotos, or the suzukis, or the ktms? You'll end up spending just as much on the bike and then the conversion. But hey, if you really want to do it, go for it. You'll be one of the few out there, which definitely counts for something.

Don't know that the 5 inch rear will fit!!

Have seen some of the shelf Yam WRsm stuff!!

Have a look at the Yam site for the WR or YZ and check out the accessories!!

You could try talking to Central Wheel Comopnents http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/ I know there in the UK but they will know what will fit and they may post?? Also cover all your Motomaster 320mm rotors and caliper....

I'd love to get an Aprilia or KTM but all my gear; jacket, helmet, gloves and boots are already blue. I had a one-of-a-kind 2001 blue Aprilia so I might as well stick with the color I like most.?

You have the right rim sizes listed above. This will allow you to run a 120/70/17 front tire and a 150/17 rear tire width.

Make sure you get the caliper relocator bracket when you get the larger 320mm front disc.

The Yoshimura RS3 exhaust system has 3 different exhuast decibels to choose from when you buy the Tec Kit.

Also, consider what sprocket gearing you would like. I ran stock front sprocket and -3 rear sprocket. This allowed me to keep the stock chain length and I could achieve 100mph top end speed. It would do 4th gear power wheelies too. I could cruise at 65 mph in fifth gear without over-revving the motor.

You can certainly fit the 5", it alows you to run a 160 not a 150 as mentioned previously, if you want to run a 150 go with a 4.25" rear. With the 5" be prepared to offset the rim or use sprockets to move the chain over. As for the brakes, you can get full race sets with the caliper and 320m disk or just go for the 320mm disk with relocator bracket. Then as you get more seriuos plop on a good streetbike master. You dont need new forks, you dont even need them lowered or resprung unless your racing... Oh and make sure you gear properly, I hope this answers you!

Thanks for the onderful advice everyone. I will weigh my options and let you in on wat happens. I'm quite excitd to get this going so it shouldn't be long now before I make that definitive decision on what I intend to do.

Also, you should consider how much wear and tear you will be putting your transmission through because of the non cush-drive on your rear wheel.

When I ride the street, I try and shift as smooth as possible. My transmission seems to have loosened up since the addition of 17" SM wheels and sticky street tires. No problems yet, I have about 6,000 miles of street and dirt use. Just a concern.

Wow! I didn't know I had to keep that in mind but can you help me understand what a non cush-drive is. This may turn out to be a dumb questions but can I get a cush-drive right off the bat so I don't have to worry about it?

There is alot of controversy over whether or not a cush drive is really nessesary... do a search here or better yet go to http://www.supermotojunkie.com for all the info you will ever need!

i have just finished my conversion today !!!

I used a 3.25 front and 4.25 rear 120/70/17 front tyre 160/60/17 rear tyre, You need a caliper bracket, new chain, 15t front sprocket, 42-44t rear sprocket, 320mm front disc, standard rear disc,

You will need to reroute the front brake hose on the outside also as it is way too close to the front wheel in its present location, the rest is easy just takes a little time, i can have my bike ready to race in SM set up in 3 hours with a few modificaions to the suspension set up etc...

Total cost for me so far is £700
